The suffer-in-silence register

The Ch. 84 statement installs suffer-in-silence as the operative Zoro-arc register from Ch. 51 onward. The register has three governing rules:

1. Zoro never speaks the wound himself — it is always named by outside witnesses (Usopp Ch. 70 ‘You’ll open your wounds!! You’re still recuperating, you know?!’; Nami Ch. 71 ‘All those bandages…’; Sanji Ch. 76 ‘After your humiliating defeat…’; Nojiko Ch. 84 ‘Our brother’s been suffering in silence’).
2. The wound’s severity escalates with each witness — Nojiko’s half-year-cripple-tier is the most-clinical reading; earlier readings are bandage-aware or defeat-aware but not severity-quantified.
3. The wound is not arc-resolved — Ch. 84 explicitly confirms the wound is still open mid-Arlong-arc; the chest-scar is permanent (visible at Marineford Ch. 597+).

The chapter installs a witness-statement-canonizes-protagonist’s-silent-suffering grammar that recurs as a structural device:

• Chopper-as-medic (Drum arc onward) — Chopper’s medical-eye reads Zoro’s wounds the way Nojiko’s outside-medical-eye reads them here.
• Robin-as-witness (later arcs) — Robin’s deadpan acknowledgment of Zoro’s near-deaths inherits this grammar.
