Kuroobi Ray Fish-Man Officer
Ch. 87 — Sanji-vs-Kuroobi fight resolved off-page; KO’d in courtyard tableau (page 3)
The Ch. 75 kuro-obi (黒帯 = black belt) etymology pre-load + Ch. 84 Fish-Man-Karate-named-but-master-undemonstrated combat-pair pre-load resolves off-page (presumed Ch. 85-86). Ch. 87 page 3 canonizes the result in tableau — Kuroobi face-down KO’d next to Hatchan on the courtyard pavement (DOOM!! / KUROOBI… / KLK KLK ). Combat-vocabulary install (Kuroobi’s actual Fish-Man Karate ougi names) pending Ch. 85-86 chapter notes when produced.
Ch. 86 — Kuroobi consummates the Ch. 75
kuro-obi etymology pre-load as full Fish-Man Karate combat-master; defeated by Sanji in same chapter
Kuroobi’s first on-page combat-action is FISH-MAN KARATE… FOREARM SLEDGE!!! (page 7) — the black-belt name + ray-fishman species combination is operationalized as named-attack-banner Fish-Man Karate technique . The chapter installs his full combat-vocabulary (Forearm Sledge, Duelling Hair Tether, Bowel-Buster, Flaming Axe Kick, Back Foot Jawbreaker, Guffaw Palm Bomb, Pulverizing Pressure Plunge, Hundred-Brick Fist, Thousand-Brick Fist [unfinished]) — nine named techniques in one chapter, the most prolific named-combat-display by a single fish-man to-date. The one-officer-per-Straw-Hat recruitment-pattern grammar’s Kuroobi-vs-Sanji prediction is consummated.
The seed
Ch. 85 page 17 — Sanji-vs-Kuroobi duel-lock locks (combat-encounter payoff)
Kuroobi (towering, dorsal-fin-up, RRMM MMBBB / DOOM!! ): “Roronoa Zolo!! How dare you do that to Hachi!!!?” Sanji intercepts deadpan-cigarette-profile: “You sent me flying quite a ways before… Especially at a certain restaurant I know. …You underestimate me.” The Ch. 75 kuro-obi/black-belt etymology pre-load reaches its combat-encounter payoff. Pair with Ch. 84’s Choo “40th-degree Master of Fish-Man Karate” — the named-master-of-the-named-art combat-arrangement locks. Actual fight pending Ch. 86-87.
Ch. 75 page 12 — Kuroobi introduced with name-card
KUROOBI — OFFICER, ARLONG’S PIRATES (A RAY FISH-MAN) — on-panel epithet card. Name etymology: Kuroobi (クロオビ) = 黒帯 (kuro-obi) = black belt — the karate dan-grade indicator. Species (ray ) + name (black belt ) compose as fish-man-karate-master . Combat is held off-page in Ch. 75 — Kuroobi crosses arms and scowls but does not engage. The name-and-species-as-fighting-style-tell pre-loads his combat-mode for a future fight.
Why it matters
The all-fishmen-but-species-diverse crew composition (Ch. 75 canonization) is not generic-fishmen but species-coded-distinct-officers . Each officer is a different fish species with species-coded-combat-style . Kuroobi is the karate slot. The pre-loaded combat-grammar is fish-man karate (魚人空手) — a martial art whose existence is pre-named via Kuroobi’s kuro-obi etymology before the term itself is on-page.
Ch. 84 — Fish-Man Karate named on-page (via Choo, not Kuroobi)
Choo’s chapter-line (Ch. 84 page 15 — ‘I’M A 40TH-DEGREE MASTER OF FISH-MAN KARATE!!!!’ ) delivers the first on-page utterance of Fish-Man Karate (魚人空手) as a named combat-discipline. The Ch. 75 kuro-obi (黒帯 = black belt) etymology pre-load receives its named-art payoff. Note the grammar: the art is named in the panel of its first defeat (Sanji one-shots Choo on the same page). The named-master-of-the-named-art slot remains unconsummated for Sanji — Kuroobi (the kuro-obi / black-belt ) is forward-paired with Sanji per the Ch. 75 prediction. The chapter reinforces the Sanji-vs-Kuroobi combat-pair pre-load.
