This is the surviving live residual of the refuted origin sub-claim (this pass’s SC3) in the gauntlet verdict Shanks Has a Figarland Twin. The full 4-Billion-chest chain (“Magnolia” mother → Dragon-smuggling → chest-baby is Shanks) was refuted because none of its named links is on-page — but the terminal link, the chest-baby’s identity, is a genuinely open thread the vault deliberately leaves unassigned, and a single future caption could settle it either way. That makes it a clean falsifiable prediction rather than an asserted fact.

The circumstantial case: red-haired twins Shamrock and Shanks are born at God Valley (Ch. 1158 p.15, Ch. 1159 pp.4-5); the Holy Knights repeatedly try to reclaim “the son of our commander, a child with red hair” from the Roger crew, who beat them back (Ch. 1170 p.6) — placing an infant Shanks in Roger-crew custody after God Valley; and the Roger Pirates crack a God Valley treasure chest and find a baby (“A baby?!!”) on the same escape (Ch. 1166 p.9). Read together, the chest-baby is a strong candidate to be the rescued Figarland infant. Later “St. Shanks (Figarland Family)” material (Ch. 1167 pp.12-13) confirms the Figarland-blood spine the chest origin would complete.

Confidence is deliberately low (0.2). The vault keeps the chest-baby as a distinct, unassigned mystery — the Foreshadowing note explicitly forbids assigning it an identity from later knowledge, and its open question (“whose baby is in the chest?”) is kept separate from “who took the infant twins off the island?” There are competing candidates at the same event (Rocks’s hidden child; the Buccaneer boy Kuma; a dying buccaneer’s twins), and a timeline strain: the twins were born ~a year before the God Valley Incident, whereas the chest infant reads as a newborn. Garp’s “Roger had a son” beat even points the chest motif toward Roger’s line rather than Shanks’s.

Roger-crew custody of the infant Shanks is settled: the Holy Knights “repeatedly came to reclaim ‘the son of our commander… a child with red hair’” from the Roger Pirates, who beat them back and kept him (Ch. 1170 pp.6-7) — squaring with the Ch. 1161 structure where a rescuer flees with Garling’s twin infants and St. Maffey recovers only one (“Got him… Garling has a kid…?”, pp.5-6), and with the flashback caption “(Figarland Family) St. Shanks… separated after birth” (Ch. 1167 pp.12-13). The second link — that the specific treasure-chest infant (Ch. 1166 p.9) is how Shanks came aboard — remains uncaptioned in the manga through 1189, but it is the stated origin in Oda’s official Film: Red supplementary (the “4 Billion” booklet: baby Shanks found in a chest of loot the Roger Pirates stole), and the manga has now drawn that exact scene at the exact event. Author-stated supplementary plus an on-page dramatization is strong corroboration, but per the conservative guard it is not the panel itself.
