Dr. Vegapunk’s Paramecia Devil Fruit, named on-page in Ch. 1067 (p.2): “I’ve got the Brain-Brain Fruit, so I’m a Brain-Man!!” The power makes the user’s brain physically grow to accommodate the volume of data it stores, granting a “preternaturally gifted mind” and an effectively infinite data-bank — “the world’s largest brain, which continues growing to this day.”
Vegapunk’s brain grew so large that he “was going to be the height of a giant”; he cut his head down and externalized the ever-growing brain into Punk Records atop Egghead, connecting to it remotely via an apple-top antenna. The fruit underwrites his status as the world’s greatest scientist and his dream that all humanity could one day “share a brain” by mutually accessing Punk Records (p.5).
Etymology
- Surface meaning: ノミノミの実 Nomi Nomi no Mi — the One Piece Wiki glosses the name simply as “Brains.” “Nomi” derives from 脳ミソ nōmiso, Japanese for “brains” / “brain tissue”; the power-title 脳ミソ人間 Nōmiso Ningen is VIZ’s “Brain-Man.”
- Pun layer: “Nomi” is a homophone of の実 no Mi (“fruit of”), the suffix on every Devil Fruit name — so Nomi Nomi no Mi is literally the same two morae three times over. Oda makes the joke explicit by having Vegapunk fumble the name the first time he explains the ability (@1067 p.2).
