Living Toys of Dressrosa

Structural lore — what Oda has confirmed on-page about Dressrosa’s living toys. The mechanism behind them is forward; this note records only the in-window facts.

What we know

• Ch. 701: Dressrosa is home to “living, breathing toys” that “naturally coexist with people throughout the city” (pp. 8–12). They speak, walk, work, and are treated as citizens.
• Ch. 701: A toy soldier greets travelers and recognizes Luffy from the newspaper (the alliance landfall).
• Ch. 701: A toy chases after a dog named “Mario” that ran off with its arm, shouting “Give me back my arm!!” (the toys are animate and self-aware enough to give chase). Toys ride carriages alongside citizens.
• Ch. 701: The country is billed as “the Land of Love, Passion and Toys” — the toys are foregrounded as the arc’s title concept.
• Ch. 717: The living toys were all people. A toy soldier states that “ten years ago, Doflamingo brought someone wielding dreadful powers with him… and turned all of us into toys,” and “every toy you see in Dressrosa was once a human being” (pp. 13–14). The transformation also erases the victim from the memory of everyone who knew them — the toys are rejected as strangers by their own former lovers/families (“the Forgotten and the Forgetters,” pp. 11–14). • Ch. 717: Dressrosa’s two laws (since Doflamingo’s reign, ~10 years): (1) a kingdom-wide midnight curfew — toys return to the House of Toys, humans to their houses; (2) toys must not enter human houses and humans must not enter the House of Toys, a “solemn boundary between artificial creations and biological humans” (pp. 9–10).
• Ch. 728: The erasure is total and self-unaware. A person turned into a toy retains every memory of their human life, but everyone else loses all memory that the person ever existed — including the toy’s own family, and even other toys. One toy insists, “My name is Milo. Not One-poko.” Named “the greatest tragedy of Dressrosa… to not even realize that you have forgotten someone precious to you” (pp. 15–16).
• Ch. 728: Because every toy remembers being human and hates Doflamingo, the toys are a hidden reservoir of would-be rebels — “the number of tragedies that hold the key” to the resistance’s operation (p. 16).
• Ch. 728: Broken/discarded toys are dumped in “the Scrap Heap” beneath Dressrosa, where they are forgotten entirely (p. 18). Cross-link Dressrosa Underground Trade Port.
• Ch. 732: The living toys are confirmed transformed humans — the Tontatta plan is to defeat Sugar and “turn all da toys back into humans!!!” (p. 3). The toys are confined nightly to the House of Toys beneath the Royal Palace (humans forbidden; no beds) and toil all night, every night (pp. 4–5). Underground in the trade port, toys are worked as forced labor; one collapses begging to see its family (p. 17), showing the toys retain human memory and emotion.
• Ch. 737: The toys’ mechanism is shown on-page in flashback (pp. 14–16) — a person is turned into a toy by Sugar’s touch (Hobi Hobi no Mi; the fruit’s formal NAME is still forward @0743), bound by a contract (“obey the family’s orders” / “never harm humans” / “work or fight until you die”) and erased from everyone’s memory (“Nobody remembers you no more!!”), inside the Officer’s Tower. This makes the city’s casual coexistence the product of mass forced-labor + amnesia, not benign whimsy.
• Ch. 738: The transformation is shown live. When Leo’s Tontatta strike force attacks Sugar, her touch turns them into toys — “Little Black Bears!!!” (p. 13) — sealing a contract binding each toy to obey (“…until the end of thy life… thou shalt obey my orders,” p. 14) and erasing the victim from everyone’s memory (the transformed dwarf “Flapper” is no longer recognized; “Has everyone forgotten about me?!”, pp. 14–15). Confirms again that a city of sentient toys is treated as unremarkable because the people they were have been wiped from memory — and why captured kin “never come home.” (Wielder Sugar / power Hobi Hobi no Mi on-page; the fruit’s formal NAME still prints Ch. 743.)

• Ch. 739: Kyros was the FIRST person turned into a toy, ten years ago — and Sugar forgetting to bind him with the memory-erasing “contract” was her “first and only mistake,” the lone exception that let one toy keep its will and resist the Donquixote Family ever since (pp. 18–19). Reconfirms the living toys are people transformed by Sugar’s touch, bound by a contract and erased from everyone’s memory (the toys are forgotten by all of Dressrosa, even loved ones). • Ch. 741 pp. 4–6: A Tontatta dwarf describes the toys’ hidden suffering — they “stroll cheerfully twoo da town… but are crying on da inside,” and the tragedy that “da tragic big people who don’t wealize dey’ve lost their loved ones” still live among them. On-page testimony (from the victims’ side) of the living-toy enslavement and the memory-wipe that erases toy-ified people from their families’ memories; the toys are forced to “work underground day and night” in the hidden underground trading port. • Ch. 742: The toys are transformed people — shown in full via Kyros. Sugar’s power turns a person into a toy AND erases them from everyone’s memory: Kyros severs his own leg, is touched by Sugar, becomes a one-legged toy (“My body is now a toy,” p. 11), and is forgotten by all — even King Riku (“the name is unfamiliar”). This is the mechanism behind both the living toys and the forgotten coliseum statue. The reversal off-switch is finally tripped at the chapter’s end — Sugar is dropped unconscious (Tatababasco grape + Usopp’s terror-face, pp. 18–19) — loading the toy-curse collapse (mass reversion lands ~0743, forward). • Ch. 745: the reverted toys take the offensive. The former toys — people returned to human form after Sugar’s defeat — assault the hidden factory en masse (p. 3), turning the freed labor force against the regime that enslaved them.

• Ch. 746: the toys were people — confirmed by their reversion. With the toy-maker defeated (off-page), the living toys revert to humans and, with them, the nation’s erased memories return: a one-legged toy soldier becomes human again (“He’s back to being human, isn’t he?”); citizens recover the truth of “the horrible night ten years ago” and realize the Riku royal army “were just being controlled” — not guilty. Confirms on-page that the “living toys” were transformed people, not automatons — the disguise of a concealed crime.

Chronology / structure

The toys’ origin and nature are unexplained this chapter — presented matter-of-factly as an ordinary feature of the city. The gap between their evident humanity and the citizenry’s casual indifference is a deliberately planted mystery.
