In the Luffy ↔Doflamingo finale, Doflamingo states plainly that “all the toys in this kingdom were originally human ” — confirming on his own tongue the toy↔human transformation underpinning the arc (the Hobby-Hobby mechanic Sugar wielded).
Ch. 776 — p. 15 (the toy-curse from the victim’s side)
Kyros voices the toy-curse’s lived emotional cost: “the despair of being forgotten by your loved ones… I cannot even feel the warmth leaving your dying body. The pain of not being able to feel anything you touch!!!” — the psychological dimension of Sugar ’s Hobi Hobi no Mi transformation, told from inside the curse.
Ch. 717 — pp. 11–14 (the Forgotten and the Forgetters)
A toy soldier shows Franky humans who feel nothing for the toys that were once their lovers, husbands and fathers (Esta; the woman “Milo” and her son). He declares the kingdom split into “the Forgotten and the Forgetters .” The transformation Doflamingo imported a decade ago doesn’t merely change bodies — it deletes the victim from everyone’s memory : “every toy you see in Dressrosa was once a human being,” turned by “someone wielding dreadful powers” Doflamingo brought (pp. 13–14). Why this matters
When Oda narrates an uncanny social fact (“a family that doesn’t recognize its own father”) as ordinary local color, the omission is the setup. A transformation that erases not just a person’s body but everyone’s memory of them is a negative-space Chekhov device: the “missing people” of Dressrosa become the lever that, once the wielder is undone, restores a hidden history all at once. Frames the toy-curse as a world-rule (memory-manipulation as a mechanic) rather than one character’s story.
