Summary
The Round-3 Combat duel between Luffy and Foxy rages below deck inside Foxy’s ship, the Sexy Foxy, hidden from the cheering crowd above. Foxy weaponizes his Devil-Fruit power — the “Slow-Slow Beam” — across a chamber of contraptions: a wall-sized punching machine, the “Gorilla Puncher #13,” plus mirrors that reflect the beam’s “Slowpoke photons,” trapping Luffy between slow-beams and gold-tipped fists (“Slowpoke Ball Demon Coach,” “Mirror Racket”). Luffy is repeatedly tagged by the beam (which makes him move in slow motion for ~30 seconds while the blows “gradually build up and then explode”), and the gorilla fists also burn. Luffy figures out the mirror trick and counters — escaping a “GLEEEM” beam by springing off and landing a Gum-Gum Pistol — but Foxy’s machine pounds him with “Gorilla Punch Solid Gold Hits.” Outside, the Straw Hats and the festival crowd can only watch the ship shake and trade jokes about Luffy’s afro (“the soul of a brother — afro power!”). Both fighters surface above deck: Foxy grinning and intact, Luffy “singed to a crisp” but standing. Foxy uses a “Slow-Slow Beam Sword” to restrain Luffy’s arms and legs, then unloads a “Megaton Nine-Tails Rush.” Even slowed, scorched, and “practically being killed,” Luffy refuses to fall — declaring he won’t lose “a single member of my crew, even if it kills me” — and the chapter ends with the caption “Straw Hat Luffy is back on his feet!!” (To be continued in Vol. 34.)
New reveals
- Foxy weaponizes his Noro Noro no Mi (Slow-Slow Fruit) below deck — the “Slow-Slow Beam” (pp. 5, 9, 16, 18). It fires “Slowpoke photons” that, on contact, make the target move in extreme slow motion; the on-page timer is “thirty seconds” (p. 2). (The fruit was named on-page @ Ch. 309; this chapter spells out a new arena mechanic for it — the mirror-reflection — and gives the attack-names, not the fruit name again.)
- NEW Slow-Slow Beam mechanic — the photons reflect off mirrors (pp. 5–7): “Slowpoke photons reflect off mirrors!!” Foxy redirects the beam around the arena, bouncing it with a “Mirror Racket” (p. 7) to hit Luffy from unexpected angles (“look behind you”). This is a new wrinkle of the Noro Noro no Mi not seen in 0309–0315.
- The beam’s effect described: while the Slow-Slow Beam is in effect, the blows the victim receives “gradually build up, and then explode” — i.e., damage lands all at once when the slow wears off (p. 2) — consistent with the “speed returns as if nothing happened” rule established @0309.
- Foxy’s below-deck combat arena / kit (pp. 4–18): the “Gorilla Puncher #13” — a wall-mounted machine of gorilla-headed boxing fists (“after undergoing many improvements… perfectly streamlined”; the gorilla head is a running gag); the gorilla fists also burn (p. 6, “the punches also burn”) and can “even punch out Neptunian sea monsters”; the “Slowpoke Ball Demon Coach” (p. 7); the “Megaton Nine-Tails Rush” (pp. 16, 18) — a heavier variant of the “Nine-Tails Rush” combo that debuted @ Ch. 315; and a “Slow-Slow Beam Sword” (p. 16). (The Sexy Foxy’s trap interior — gun deck, treadmill hall, spike rooms — was established @0314–0315; the Gorilla Puncher #13 / Mirror Racket chamber is the newly-shown room here.)
- The Slow-Slow Beam Sword restrains limbs: Foxy beams Luffy’s arms and legs to immobilize them, telling him “the rest of your body should be mobile, so feel free to move around” (p. 16) before the Nine-Tails Rush.
- Luffy’s motive made explicit: he won’t lose because losing the final Combat round would cost him “a single member of my crew” permanently (p. 19) — the irreversible final-match stake established @ Ch. 313 is the emotional engine of his refusal to fall (“…even if it kills me!!”).
- The whole duel is fought below deck inside the Sexy Foxy and is invisible to the audience (pp. 11–13); the crowd judges the match only by the ship shaking and the “BOSS!!” cheers.

- Location: Long Ring Long Land (combat aboard/below the Sexy Foxy)
- Cover story: Gedatsu — “GEDATSU’S UNEXPECTED LIFE ON THE BLUE SEA, VOL. 3: ‘UNEXPECTEDLY ALIVE’” (p. 1)
Notable panels
- p. 1 — Title splash: “Chapter 316: BROTHER SOUL.” Cover-serial art: “GEDATSU’S UNEXPECTED LIFE ON THE BLUE SEA, VOL. 3: ‘UNEXPECTEDLY ALIVE.’” Gedatsu (the spiky-haired Skypiea Priest) sits cross-legged on a riverbank in the Blue Sea, three Jet-Dial exhaust trails rising from his head, beside a Blue-Sea local man wearing a shirt with a hot-spring/onsen (♨) symbol (the “Goro the Hole Digger” figure whose hot-spring motif continues into Vol. 4 @0318), with food and a sake bottle laid out. Confirms Gedatsu survived his fall from Skypiea to the Blue Sea. This is the first installment of the Gedatsu cover serial seen in this read-batch (already at Vol. 3); the preceding chapters 0312–0315 carried decorative title pages / Title Page Series #7, NOT this serial — so Vols. 1–2 fall at earlier, not-yet-pinpointed chapters (backfill). Vol. 4 is confirmed @ Ch. 318.
- p. 2 — Below-deck combat under the Slow-Slow Beam: “The blows you receive while the Slow-Slow Beam is in effect… gradually build up, and then explode!!” / “Beyond that door waits the finality of your life!!” / “THIRTY SECONDS.” Luffy is hammered (“WHAM WHAM WHAM”).
- pp. 3–4 — Luffy flung (“FWHOOM!!”); Foxy: “I am Foxy the pilot! Allow me to introduce… GORILLA PUNCHER #13!!” A wall of gorilla-headed boxing fists. The running gag: “IS THE GORILLA HEAD NECESSARY?!” “You make a good point!! BUT SHUT UP! Who needs your input!”
- pp. 5–6 — Luffy dodges the fists; Foxy fires the “SLOW-SLOW BEAM!!”; Luffy spots “A mirror!!” and Foxy reveals “Slowpoke photons reflect off mirrors!!” — the beam ricochets to hit Luffy from behind (“look behind you”). The gorilla fists also burn (“the punches also burn — be careful!! I can even punch out Neptunian sea monsters with this”).
- p. 7 — Foxy bounces the beam with a “Mirror Racket!!” and the “Slowpoke Ball Demon Coach!!”; Luffy “trapped between the beams and the punches” — “you’ll eventually be crushed between the gorilla and the mirror!!”
- p. 8 — Luffy escapes (“BWASH!!”), reappears (“Where’d he go?!” / “I hadn’t thought of that!”), and lands a “Gum-Gum… PISTOL!!” on Foxy.
- p. 9 — Foxy beams again (“Slow-Slow Beam!!”); the Gorilla Puncher pummels Luffy — “GORILLA PUNCH SOLID GOLD HITS!!” Foxy: “You fool!!”
- pp. 10–11 — The machine pounds Luffy (“WHAM WHAM WHAM”); cut to above deck: the duel is invisible — “In the third round of the Davy Back Fight, Combat… below deck a fierce duel must be unfolding!!” The crowd roars “BOSS!!” The ship is the Sexy Foxy (fox-headed prow).
- p. 12 — Straw Hat audience: Robin, Nami, Sanji, Usopp, Chopper, Zoro debate Luffy’s afro (“Luffy… with an afro!!” / “A rubber man… with an afro” / “It’s taking longer than usual”). “KA-BOOM!!! There’s action above deck!”
- pp. 13–15 — Both fighters surface (“Two forms emerge…”) but “only Boss is on his feet!!”; then Robin: “Look.” — Luffy stands too, “singed to a crisp.” Crowd: “He’s got the soul of a brother — afro power!” / “Beat ‘im up, Boss!”
- p. 16 — Foxy: “I’ve restrained your arms and legs… it’s my Slow-Slow Beam Sword… the rest of your body should be mobile, so feel free to move around” → “MEGATON NINE-TAILS RUSH!!” hammers Luffy. (A heavier variant of the Nine-Tails Rush combo that debuted @ Ch. 315.)
- pp. 17–18 — Luffy keeps getting up (“Straw Hat Luffy picks himself up!!” / “the power of the afro?”); Foxy renews the Slow-Slow Beam + Nine-Tails Rush; Usopp/crowd: “You’re playing dirty! That beam’s gotta be against the rules!” Foxy: “Punching isn’t so easy, you know!” “He’s practically killing him!”
- p. 19 — Luffy’s vow: “I won’t lose… a single member of my crew… even if it kills me!!” Caption: “Straw Hat Luffy is back on his feet!!” — “TO BE CONTINUED IN ONE PIECE, VOL. 34!” (final chapter of Vol. 33).
Open questions raised
- Does Luffy find a counter to a power that slows him and a sword that locks his limbs — and win Round 3 to end the Davy Back Fight? (Combat ongoing; cliffhanger p. 19. Resolves @ Ch. 317 “K.O.”)
- What happens to Gedatsu on the Blue Sea — how far does his cover serial run? (Vol. 3 here, p. 1; Vol. 4 confirmed @ Ch. 318.)
- The crowd notes the beam “must be against the rules” (p. 18) — does Foxy’s interference get challenged, or is “any weapon inside the circle” (the Ch. 0313 combat rule) broad enough to cover the slow-beam?
