⭐ MAJOR canon-loading B-plot. A counted cover serial running on the Skypiea-arc title pages: Ace roams port towns and Navy bases directly hunting Blackbeard (Marshall D. Teach), the former Whitebeard-Pirates crewmate who killed a shipmate and jumped ship. This is the cover-form of the Ace → Blackbeard manhunt that detonates the back half of the series:
Ace catches Blackbeard at Banaro Island (Ch. 440), loses, is captured, and his public execution is the spark that ignites the Marineford / Summit War (~Ch. 0550+) — and Ace’s death there. This decorative cover comedy is loading the single most consequential B-plot in pre-timeskip One Piece.
The strip plays Ace’s pursuit for laughs — dine-and-dashing, interrogating the wrong people, getting tossed in a river, infiltrating a Navy base in disguise, freeloading at a milk farm — exactly the comic register that makes the eventual tragic payoff land harder. Each installment is part of Oda’s official Chapter Title Page Series (Straw Hat Theater) format, carrying its own running “Vol. N” episode count.

The serial reaches its FINAL VOLUME on the Ch. 305 title page — “In the Name of Pirates” — where Ace, seated before his Whitebeard-crest jolly roger, fails to catch Blackbeard but vows to keep hunting him. The cover arc closes and threads directly into the forward-canon Ace-vs-Blackbeard manhunt (see Forward-payoff hook below). No new cover serial began in the 0303–0307 range (the arc-change chapters are standalone title splashes — see Non-serial title pages in this range below).

Captions recorded verbatim from the printed title pages (page-001.jpg), image-verified across the reader passes. Reconciliation note: the parallel readers’ Vol. numbers turned out to be fully self-consistent and continuous — Vol. 2 (0273) → Vol. 28 (0303) → FINAL (0305), exactly one installment per chapter that carries the caption, with only four chapters skipped (0284, 0287, 0293, 0304), each of which is independently confirmed as a non-serial page (see below). No renumbering or gap-flagging was required; the earlier “Vols 6–19 are un-logged back-fill candidates” warnings on the prior version of this note are now resolved — those installments are logged below.

Reconciled installment count
- 27 numbered installments logged in this vault (Vol. 2 → Vol. 28) plus the FINAL VOLUME = 28 captioned installments on record.
- Vol. 1 (the opener) is the only un-located installment — a back-fill candidate sitting just before 0273 (~0270–0272 range).
- With Vol. 1 included, the serial is 29 installments long (Vol. 1 → Vol. 28 → FINAL VOLUME), one per chapter from ~0272 to 0305, minus the four non-serial chapters listed below.
- Numbering verdict: continuous and unambiguous. No installment numbers needed to be corrected; the readers’ earlier inter-batch “jump” warnings (e.g. 0286 Vol. 13 → 0294 Vol. 19) are explained simply by the intervening chapters now being logged (Vols. 14–18 on 0288–0292, with 0287 and 0293 being non-serial pages).

The Long-Ring-Long-Land arc-change chapters (0303–0307) show only standalone title splashes, not the start of a new ongoing cover serial:
- 0303 — still carries the Ace serial (Vol. 28); no new serial.
- 0304 — “Long Island Adventure,” in-narrative Going-Merry splash (non-serial).
- 0305 — Ace serial’s FINAL VOLUME; the page-1 art also reads “FOXY THE SILVER FOX” (chapter title). No successor serial introduced.
- 0306 — “Donut Race” title splash (page numbered 7; flying-squirrel fauna). No cover serial.
- 0307 — “Ready, Set, Donut!” — a Sanji standalone title-page illustration (Sanji dozing at a table). Decorative; not an ongoing serial.
Recorded for the next batch: as of the 0307 frontier, no new cover serial has started. The standalone LRLL title pages (0304, 0306, 0307) are filed in Long-Ring-Long-Land-Title-Page-One-Offs. - “PL”-apron recurring man: a chef/townsperson in a “PL” shirt chases or reacts in 0273, 0275, 0276, and 0277 — a small running cast member (the dine-and-dash victim), not a plot figure.
- Moda / dairy-farm sub-thread: Moda and the milk cows recur as a warm running gag (Vols. 8–9, then 24, 26–27 closing with her parents being Navy galley cooks). A self-contained comic B-thread inside the manhunt.
