Chapter 292: To Meet, Like the Half-Moon Hidden by Clouds

Summary

The chapter is told entirely in the Calgara / Noland historical flashback (no present-day Giant Jack content this chapter — the directional climb beat is not in these pages). Five years after his first voyage, Mont Blanc Noland is re-appointed admiral of an exploration ship by the king of Lvneel and, with new permission from “Marijoa” (Mariejois) to enter the Grand Line, sails back toward Jaya with an unfamiliar crew (the king’s soldiers) (pp. 3-5). On November 16, 1127, the Age of Kaien, Noland reaches the spot — but the island/city is gone; only a stub of land “drops off” into the sea where the golden bell and Shandora once stood (pp. 5-7). Noland cannot understand it, calling out for Kalgara (p. 7). Cut to Lvneel, present (flashback frame): Noland’s public execution. He testifies “El Dorado exists” — he saw a great city of gold on Jaya six years ago — but the people brand him a liar, and the admiral who traveled with him claims it’s “a bald-faced lie” out of “worry for [Noland’s] safety” (pp. 8-11). Sentenced to death by beheading, Noland’s final thoughts are of Calgara and the golden bell — “ring for me, light of Shandora!!” (pp. 7-8). The flashback then tells what actually happened to Jaya: one year before Noland’s return, Calgara and the Shandians thrive in the rebuilt city, vowing to keep ringing the bell so Noland can find them again (pp. 12-13); then a Knock-Up Stream (“WHOOM!!!”) erupts under the island and launches the entire landmass — Shandora, the bell, and the Shandians — straight up into the sky (pp. 13-16). It lands in Skypiea, where the Skypieans hail the new “Vearth” as a gift from heaven and a god-figure (Enel’s ancestor, “I am the Kami!!”) orders the existing inhabitants dragged out (pp. 16-17). War erupts: the Shandians defend their land against the invaders (“Bring back the light of Shandora!!”), and a dying Calgara’s last words become the 400-year creed (pp. 17-19). The chapter closes on Calgara reaching for the golden bell, vowing he and Noland will meet again “no matter what.”

• What exactly is the “Age of Kaien” calendar, and how does dating Noland’s return (1127) align with the 400-year and 800-year clocks? (Date is given but its reference frame is not.)
