Chapter 279: Pirate Luffy vs. Kami Eneru

Summary

Down on Angel Island, the White Berets and Captain McKinley scramble to evacuate the population to the Blue Sea before Enel’s deadline. McKinley confesses his shame at having served Enel out of fear, then resolves to go back and warn the Blue-Sea people who can’t escape. Conis (heso!) joins the evacuation effort. Aboard the flying ark Maxim above Upper Yard, Luffy confronts Enel directly: “I don’t see anything godlike about you!!” Enel counters that, as a mere Paramythia (Paramecia), Luffy is powerless against him, and unloads his lightning arsenal — El Thor, 6,000,000-Volt Lightning Dragon, 100,000,000-Volt Varie. The strikes hammer Luffy, but he keeps standing. The chapter’s hinge lands across pages 15-19: physical attacks pass through Enel’s Logia body, and lightning has zero effect on Luffy “because he’s made of rubber.” Nami realizes it; Enel, sweating in horror, collapses to his knees as the narration names the matchup: Luffy is the one and only being against whom Enel’s lightning is completely useless — Enel’s “natural enemy.”

• Luffy’s rubber body is completely immune to Enel’s lightning. Enel’s Goro Goro lightning has no effect on Luffy because he is made of rubber; narration declares Luffy is “Eneru’s one and only… natural enemy!” (pp. 15-19).
