  • Arlong 100M Berry Buyback Contract
  • **The cache was 93 million berries — not 99M** (page 2, Nezumi from the Marine ship: *'Ninety-three million berries!!!'*). Page 80's *7-million-to-go / 99M-stash* interior-monologue is **slightly downgraded** — Nami had 93M, not 99M. The chapter recalibrates the cache-figure and confirms it was successfully seized by Nezumi's Marines. *'30 percent of it is ours!'* — Nezumi keeps 30% (≈27.9M berries) as his cut; the remaining 70% (≈65.1M) flows back to Arlong. The corruption-pipeline's **revenue-split** is on-page.
  • **Arlong's *cartographer-decades* doctrine — Nami was never going to be freed** (page 8, flashback echo). Arlong in flashback: *'Hmph. I can't let a cartographer like Nami slip through my fingers!'* / *'But I'm no heartless monster.'* / *'Once she's drawn charts of all the world's oceans, I'll set her free.'* Crew laughing: *'HA HA HA HA HA!! That'll take her decades!!!'* The 100M-buyback was **always a paper-condition** because Arlong's parallel commitment (cartographer-output-for-life) was the **real** condition. The Ch. 71 *Surveyor of Arlong's crew* + Ch. 79 *cartographer-recognition-keeps-her-alive* aggregate retroactively reveals Arlong's plan: keep Nami inside the crew until she has mapped every ocean — i.e., **forever** — under the pretense of a buyback. The chapter installs the **two-tier deception**: the 100M is the visible promise; the decades-of-cartography is the hidden enforcement.
  • Coco Village Endurance Vow
  • Nami Arlong Sun Tattoo
  • **Luffy stops Nami's tattoo-stabbing by catching her wrist** (page 12, *WAP...!!!*). Luffy (foreground) catches her knife-hand mid-stab. The two-fact-of-one-person composition: Nami (broken, post-help-request) and Luffy (silent, post-witness). The chapter installs the **Luffy-intercepts-Nami-self-harm** beat — the first physical Luffy-protects-Nami composition in the series.
  • Nami Never Sheds A Tear Doctrine
  • Hat Handoff Promise
  • **Luffy's *OKAY!!!!!* — the recruitment-grammar pivot** (page 15, full-page close-up: *'OKAY!!!!!'* — Luffy with raised eyes, hat removed, determined). The Ch. 80 *what's-her-problem* uncomprehending-witness register is here **fully resolved** — Luffy responds to Nami's *'HELP...'* with a single full-page *'OKAY!!!!!'*. The chapter installs the **Luffy-recruits-by-witness** pattern in its **purest form**: Luffy needs **only Nami's request** — not her backstory, not her reasons, not her circumstances — to commit. The Ch. 14 *registered-the-wound-without-asking-for-specifics* + Ch. 77 *I-don't-care-about-her-past* + Ch. 80 *what's-her-problem* triad all converge here. The chapter is the **arc-climax recruitment-grammar pivot** — Nami is now operationally a Straw Hat protected by Luffy.
  • Yosaku Johnny Retreat From Arlong-Tier
  • **Luffy bursts into Arlong Park demanding to know which one is Arlong** (page 17, *KA-BLAM!!!!*). Luffy crashes the front of Arlong Park (apparently kicking the gates open): *'Brother Luffy!!'* (Yosaku/Johnny). Luffy (close-up, klak-klak sound effect on his cracking knuckles): *'...is Arlong? Which one...'* Then in a foreground composition, Luffy faces Arlong's massive shark-toothed jaw: *'Who are you?'* The chapter ends on the **Luffy-Arlong first eye-contact** beat — Luffy doesn't know what Arlong looks like and asks point-blank. The chapter pre-loads the Arlong-arc combat-opening for the next chapter.
  • **Title-page cover splash** (page 1) — non-cover-story splash of childhood Nami, Nojiko, and an unnamed boy (likely young Chabo or another village child) eating noodles outdoors at a wooden table, with the family dog slurping noodles from a *MANDARIN* labeled crate on the ground. A bird perches on a wooden post; palm trees and Bell-mère's house architecture in background. The composition is **pre-Bell-mère-death pastoral** — the family scene from the flashback era, deployed as the title-page **after** the death has been canonized (Ch. 78-79). The title *TEARS* and the warm-family-scene-cover juxtapose ironically: the chapter's tears flow because **this scene is what was lost**. Oda's title-page-as-emotional-counterweight technique.

Arc: Arlong Park · Saga: East Blue · Volume: 9

Summary

The chapter title page (page 1) is a warm-family-scene splash: childhood Nami and Nojiko at an outdoor table with a friend and a dog all eating noodles together — the pre-Bell-mère-death Coco Village in pastoral mode, ironically counterweighted against the chapter’s title TEARS.

Pages 2-3: cut to Arlong Park harbor. Nezumi’s Marine ship has returned with 93 million berries of Nami’s cache — ‘I can’t stop laughing!!’ — and a 30/70 split with Arlong. Nezumi: ‘That poor naive girl worked like a dog for eight years to free her village. Hmph!’ Inside Arlong Park: Arlong, laughing, delivers the chapter’s trap-deal reveal: ‘If you can’t come up with 100 million berries… I can’t give you back your village. Why, how unfortunate. But a deal’s a deal. Just start saving up again!! Now, now! It’s only 100 million berries.’ Nami, tearstained, gritted teeth: ‘You cheat!!!’ The Ch. 74 I-never-break-a-promise boast and Ch. 80 when-did-I-ever-break-my-promise doubling-down are here paid off — the contract was a trap. The promise-keeping was the promise’s broken-form: Arlong stays technically compliant (‘a deal’s a deal’) while his Marine ally robs the buyer en route.

Page 4 — Arlong, throned, looming over Nami: ‘Of course, if you do, the lives of everyone in Coco Village… will be on your head!!! Or do you intend to run away?’ Cut to the village: Genzo addresses Nami over her shoulder (memory or arrival): ‘I knew, Nami.’ / ‘So we pretended we didn’t know. Because you knew we were counting on you. But we didn’t want you to feel you couldn’t give up and flee…’ — the Ch. 80 villagers-pretended-not-to-know doctrine is re-keyed as Nami’s interior memory. Arlong (taunting): ‘What’s the matter, Nami? Finally running away!?’ Nami strikes him (WHAK!!).

Pages 5-7 — the Coco Village endurance vow officially breaks. Genzo, weapons distributed, sweat-drenched: ‘Get your weapons! We’re going to fight!!!’ / ‘That’s it!!!’ Villagers running with arms. Nami, restraining them, sobbing: ‘That would be the end of everything!!!’ / ‘Don’t throw away your lives!!!’ / ‘Don’t do it!!!’ / ‘Mr. Genzo! Everyone!! Please!!!’ / ‘Or it will all have been for nothing!!! You’ve got to stay alive!!’ The villagers charge anyway (GRAAAAAH!!!). Marines/Arlong-Pirates bomb the village (BOOM!!!, DOOM!!!) — Bell-mère’s house and surrounding buildings burning in the background. Genzo’s voice-over: ‘But this is the last straw!!!! We would fight on by surviving!! No matter how painful or insulting their rule was, as long as Nami was all right… Eight years ago we chose to live in disgrace, and we made a vow!’ Klik klik klik (the pinwheel turns). ‘Those fish-men played on that girl’s goodness from the start. They must pay for that!!! If there’s no hope for us to buy our freedom… then I say, let’s die fighting for it!!!!’ Villagers rallying: ‘Let’s get ‘em!!!’ / ‘We’ve all been itching to fight for eight long years!!’ / ‘I’ll be darned if I’ll live another day under their rule!!!’ / ‘Let’s get those fish-faces!!’ / ‘Any objections!!?’ / ‘GRAAAA!!!’ The Ch. 72 Coco Village Endurance Vow fight-by-enduring doctrine is broken by its own keeper. Nami: ‘NAMI!!’ (no, ‘Stop!!!’).

Page 8 — Nami tries one last gambit: ‘Wait just a little longer!!! I’m going to try again!!! Just give me one more chance!!! It’ll be easy this time…’ — clinging to the buyback contract that has just been revealed as a trap. Cut to a flashback of Arlong with his crew (panels with Arlong sitting smug): ‘Hmph. I can’t let a cartographer like Nami slip through my fingers! But I’m no heartless monster.’ (SMEK ♡) Crew member: ‘You sure have a cruel streak…’ Arlong: ‘Once she’s drawn charts of all the world’s oceans, I’ll set her free.’ Crew laughing: ‘HA HA HA HA HA!! That’ll take her decades!!!’ — the chapter installs the cartographer-decades-doctrine — the buyback was always a cover-story for lifetime cartographer-enslavement. The 100M figure was an impossible target sized for a child to chase forever.

Page 9 — Genzo, WAP!! grabs Nami in an embrace: ‘You fought well for us!! It must’ve been worse than death for you to join that crew!!! You’ve done enough! You can’t carry the burden for the whole village anymore!’ Then: ‘…leave the island. But now you should… You fought well.’ Nami: ‘Mr. Genzo…’ Nojiko, smiling: ‘And you have dreams!! You’re strong and cunning!!’ Villager: ‘He’s right!’ The chapter’s release-Nami-from-the-contract village beat — Genzo and Nojiko formally release her from her self-imposed eight-year obligation.

Page 10 — Nami: ‘I… I don’t want anyone else to be hurt by them!!! Stop it, everyone!!!’ (WUP!!) Villagers stop and turn. Genzo: ‘Oh.’ / ‘We know.’ Nami, HUFF HUFF, terrified: ‘They’ll kill you all if you fight!!’ A small kid villager (likely Chabo, with a stitched cross/+ on his bandanna): ‘Nami. Our minds are made up!! It’s no use, Nami!’ Pinwheel-mounted bo-staff in foreground (the iconic Genzo-prop): plip… plip… (water/sweat droplets). The chapter’s emotional pivot — the villagers’ resolve is final.

Page 11 — Genzo, scarred-face close-up: ‘Now step aside, Nami!!’ Nami flinches. Genzo and the villagers charge with weapons (TUMP… RAAAA!! KLANK!!): ‘Maybe we can’t win, but we’ll give those fiends a good fight!!! ROAAAH!! Forward, people!!!’ The villagers march toward Arlong Park to die. Nami (foreground, knife now in her hand, looking down at her tattooed left upper arm): ‘ARLONG!!!’ (KRRK). Arlong Pirates background: ‘HA HA HA HA HA!!!’

Page 12 — Nami stabs her own Arlong-sun tattoo repeatedly: SHUNK!! SHUNK!! SHUNK!! / ‘ARLONG!!! ARLONG!!!! ARLONG!!!’ The Ch. 79 Nami Arlong Sun Tattoo brand-of-the-Arlong-crew is operationally rejected via self-harm. Then WAP…!!! — Luffy (foreground, straw-hat-visible) catches her wrist mid-stab. Nami: ‘LUFFY!!’PLUP PLUP HUFF HUFF.

Page 13 — street composition. Luffy walks toward where Nami sits on the road. Nami: ‘YEAH. I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING.’ / ‘You don’t know anything!!! What are you doing!?’ Luffy: WUP…!!! Nami: ‘I told you!! Leave this island!!’ / SOB!! / SKRSH! (Nami shoves him). Luffy: ‘Yeah, you told me.’ / ‘This has nothing to do with you!!’ (Nami’s line). Luffy says nothing in response. Nojiko and Sanji visible behind: ‘Luffy…’

Page 14 — full-page close-up of Nami’s tearstained face, looking back over her shoulder: ‘HELP…’ The chapter’s emotional summit — Nami breaks the Ch. 80 never-asked-anyone-for-help doctrine in a single softly-whispered word. Then small panels: Luffy back-shot (SHWING…), Luffy removes his straw hat (THWOMP!!!), and places it on Nami’s head (WHAP). Nami: !? The Ch. 1 hat-handoff-from-Shanks register is re-deployed as Luffy-to-Nami protection-token.

Page 15 — full-page close-up of Luffy, hat off, hair flying, determined eyes: ‘OKAY!!!!!’ The recruitment-grammar pivot. Luffy needs only Nami’s request — not her backstory, not her reasons. The Ch. 14 / Ch. 77 / Ch. 80 register-the-wound-without-the-specifics triad all converge in a single full-page commitment.

Page 16 — cut to Arlong Park entrance (or interior). Yosaku and Johnny are restrained/captured. Two fish-men officers (Hatchan, Kuroobi visible) and a third silhouetted (Choo). Yosaku/Johnny confess: ‘We heard the whole story in the woods and realized our mistake. Now we’re too ashamed to lift our heads. …We came here to make amends for misjudging Sister Nami. But we lost — by a frog’s hair!!!’ The Ch. 76 Yosaku Johnny Retreat From Arlong-Tier we-cannot-scale exit is reversed by conscience — they came back not to win but to apologize. Fish-men: ‘You’re no match for the fish-men, so we can’t let you through!!! We’re waiting for a certain crew that’s sure to show up here.’ / ‘What!?’ / ‘Hey, those two just now came to challenge us… Zolo’s crew!? Those weaklings? Could they be part of Zolo’s crew? They weren’t even worth killing!!’ / ‘A certain crew!?’ The chapter pre-loads the Straw-Hat-arrives-at-Arlong-Park combat opening.

Page 17 — KA-BLAM!!!! — Luffy crashes through the front of Arlong Park (apparently kicking the gate off). ‘Brother Luffy!!’ (Yosaku/Johnny). Luffy, scowling, eyes-blazing: ‘…is Arlong? Which one…’ (KLAK KLAK — knuckles crack). Then Luffy faces Arlong’s massive saw-toothed jaw foreground: ‘Who are you?’ The chapter ends on Luffy-Arlong first eye-contact — Luffy doesn’t know what Arlong looks like and asks point-blank. The next-chapter combat is structurally pre-loaded.
