When asked Nami’s mother’s name, Oda blanks and answers “Utsuboko ”. A reader writes back: “Nobuko ” (one syllable from Nojiko). Oda accepts. This sits uncomfortably alongside the on-page “Bell-mère” — best read as: Bell-mère is the foster-mother-stage-name the village uses; “Nobuko” is Bell-mère’s original given name in an early draft / Oda’s behind-the-scenes mental model. Nami’s grief first gets a name when she cries “BELLE-MÈRE!!!” alone on the Merry’s deck, roughly 28 chapters before the flashback that explains it (Ch. 50 ).
