Who did the pirates “take” from Nami, and why does she steal specifically from pirates? Seeded across Ch. 9 (Nami’s “pirate robber” self-introduction and her “buy a certain village” goal) and Ch. 10 (the explicit “You pirates took someone dear to me” outburst). Paid off in the Arlong Park arc (~Ch. 78 for the Bell-mère flashback / ~Ch. 95 for the village liberation).

The question

The Ch. 10 first-read mystery is three coupled questions:

  1. Who did “the pirates” take from Nami?
  2. Why does she steal exclusively from pirates (and not from civilians, merchants, or Marines)?
  3. What is “a certain village” she needs 100,000,000 berries to buy (from Nami Tangerine Village)?

The Ch. 10 seed is the first time Nami articulates the emotional driver, but the specifics remain offstage. A reader at Ch. 10 has all three questions but no answers.

Leading theories

Theory A — Pirates conquered her hometown and killed a family member

Theory B — A loved one died defending the village

  • Claim: The “someone dear” is not necessarily blood family; could be a guardian, parent-figure, or village elder who refused to surrender.
  • Evidence leans on: Nami’s specific moral phrasing — “murderer” not “thief” not “tyrant” — implies someone was killed, not just oppressed.
  • Confidence: high.

(Forward note: both theories prove correct in the Arlong arc — Bell-mère is the adoptive guardian killed by Arlong for refusing to pay the per-adult village-tax ransom. The village is Cocoyasi.)

SBS reveals

Resolution

Resolved @ Ch. 95 — The pirates took Bell-mère, Nami’s adoptive mother, whom Arlong shot dead in front of her; Nami robs pirates to raise the 100,000,000 berries needed to buy her village, Cocoyasi, back from Arlong’s occupation.

  • Nami’s grief first gets a name when she cries “BELLE-MÈRE!!!” alone on the Merry’s deck, roughly 28 chapters before the flashback that explains it (Ch. 50).
  • The Arlong-arc flashback delivers the full answer: Bell-mère, a former “fighting sailor” who adopted the orphaned Nami and Nojiko, is killed by Arlong with a single gunshot for refusing to deny her daughters to save her own life (Ch. 77, Ch. 78, Ch. 79).
  • Nami’s “rob only pirates” code is revealed as the funding mechanism for a 100M-berry buyback — she had been embedded in Arlong’s crew for eight years, cartographer and thief, saving to ransom Cocoyasi (Ch. 80, Ch. 81).
  • The buyback was a trap Arlong never meant to honor; liberation comes through Luffy’s combat victory and Nami’s coercion of the corrupt Marine Nezumi, not through the deal (Ch. 81, Ch. 94).
  • The arc’s emotional payload lands as Nami formally joins the Straw Hats, gifts the reclaimed money back to the village, overwrites her Arlong tattoo with a tangerine-and-pinwheel design, and mounts a pinwheel on Bell-mère’s grave (Ch. 94, Ch. 95).

Long-tail codas continue post-timeskip — Jinbei’s confession that he loosed Arlong into the East Blue (Ch. 619) and Nami’s forgiveness of him (Ch. 627) — but the arc’s core answer is delivered.
