Chapter 80: A Thief Is a Thief

Summary

The chapter opens with a Sanji cover-story splash (page 1) — Sanji in straw hat with a bird perched on top, sitting beside a striped zebra in a vineyard, holding a bunch of grapes (composition marker S1.1 0302). The first chapter cover-story arc since the Buggy survival saga begins.

Pages 1-5: Beach outside Nojiko’s house. Nojiko narrates Nami’s backstory to Sanji and Yosaku/Johnny: “Ever since that day eight years ago… no one has seen Nami shed a tear. And she’s never asked anyone for help!!! She doesn’t want anyone else… to get killed by Arlong, like our mother was!!! Can you understand what a painful choice that was for her? Nami was only 10 years old, but she refused to give in to despair… she resolved to live. …She joined the crew of the very creature who killed her mother. So, to make enough money to save the village…” Sanji erupts in lovesick rage: “I, Sanji, shall beat him to death!!! That villain made my darling Nami suffer!” Yosaku/Johnny tackle and bonk him (BONK!!) — Nojiko warns: “If you keep raving about Nami being your darling… the pirates will get suspicious and all of Nami’s efforts will be undone.” Nojiko’s thesis (page 3, full-face panel, kind smile): “That girl fights alone… to her, the most painful word of all is ‘friend.’ Don’t cause her any more pain!!!”

Page 4 — flashback / explanation: “You’re going to rob pirates!?” (young Nojiko to young Nami in a previous scene — implied flashback summary). Nami’s plan-statement: “Bit by bit, I’ll squirrel away money in this treasure box, until I have 100 million berries!! Nobody will find it here.” Cuts forward to: “Nami!! We have to get you to a doctor right away!!” / “I got a bit careless. But look! Now I have a million berries!!” / “That’s right!! We live in the age of pirates!! I might as well make the most of that!!” Final tier — adult Nami at the table, smiling: “I should be able to get that much in one more voyage!! Page 5 — Nami in her room, hands-to-head, tears in her eyes, breaking from stoic-mask into release-feeling: “We’ll be free of Arlong at last!!! And all my suffering will have paid off!!! Just one more voyage and our lives will be our own again!!! I’ll finally be able to laugh from my heart!!! And then, Bell-mère…” — Nami’s first interior tears since the Ch. 50 I can’t wait to be free cry. The Arlong-rebirth-day is one more voyage away.

Pages 5-6 — village street, WUSP WUSP — Marine boots: Nezumi arrives at the head of a Marine column, with a heavy figure in a bear-costume vest beside him (Arlong-Pirates ally? Or new Marine officer?) — actually, the figure is one of the Marines wearing standard uniform, but the lead figure beside Nezumi is bear-coated and bandanna-masked. Luffy (foreground silhouette, straw hat): ”… … …” observes the procession from a side-street. Villagers murmur. Nezumi: “Just take me to her. Hyik hyik…” Luffy (eye-pop close-up): “HOW COME THAT GUY… HAS A PINWHEEL ON HIS HEAD!!? COOL.” (the chapter’s running visual gag: Luffy fixates on Genzo’s headwear, not the threat).

Page 7 — at Nojiko’s house: Nami (page 6 internal-monologue: “Guess I’ll go! Just one more job!!”) leaves through the front door, oblivious to the Marine arrival. Cut to: WHAM! — door kicked open from inside? No — the Marines arrive (heavy footstep panel, sandals visible in foreground, tangerine grove behind). Nezumi at the door, arms spread, “Are you Nami… the thief?” with Genzo at his side: “HYIK HYIK HYIK… I’M CAPTAIN NEZUMI OF NAVY BASE 16.” Then: ”… WITH SOME NAVY MEN… MR. GENZO…” — first on-page utterance of Genzo’s name by Nami; she addresses him as Mr. Genzo, indicating prior familial-village relationship. Page 9: the chapter’s title-line lands. “Since you target pirates, it’s an unusual case. My source says you rob pirates of their treasures. But a thief is a thief. Therefore, you must surrender it to us — the government. That loot belongs to the people it was originally stolen from.” The chapter’s title is Nezumi’s framing-doctrine: a thief is a thief. The no-honor-among-thieves doctrine is here deployed by the corrupt Marine to launder Arlong’s pirate-treasure-raid. Nami’s reaction (page 9, panel 4, “What!!?” close-up): the realization that Arlong’s promise is being broken via Marine cover.

Page 10 — THUD THUD!! Marines burst into the house. Nami: “WAIT! You can’t just barge into people’s homes!!” / “Find the loot!!” Nami struggles with a Marine over the doorway (WHAK!! / WH-A / STOP!!); the Marines flood the house and the tangerine grove. The chapter’s combat-tier register: Marine search-raid on a civilian home with the homeowner physically restraining a Marine and being shoved aside. Nami (page 10, panel 4): “WHY!? IS THIS HOW THE NAVY OPERATES!? ARLONG’S CREW HAS MURDERED HUNDREDS AND DESTROYED WHOLE VILLAGES!! DON’T THEY HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO?” — the Marine-tier-question is publicly raised by Nami.

Page 11 — Nami escalates: “ARE YOU GOING TO IGNORE THOSE ATROCITIES… AND SEIZE THE LOOT OF ONE PETTY THIEF!? IS THAT HOW THE GOVERNMENT WORKS!?” / “HE’S ENSLAVED EVERYONE ON THIS ISLAND!! EVERYONE ON THIS ISLAND HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO LIBERATE THEM!!! HOW CAN YOU ABANDON THEM AND DO THIS!!!” — the chapter’s most explicit Marines-are-failing-their-duty indictment from a single character. Nezumi: “Never mind her. Keep searching!!” / “Hyik hyik!! Page 12 — KLANG!! — a long bo-staff swung horizontally across the searching Marine’s face. Page 12, panel 2: “Don’t you touch Bell-mère’s tangerine grove!!!” — first appearance of Genzo in action. Older man with pinwheel-on-head, heavy facial scar (chin to brow), beanie/cap, brandishing a bo-staff. The pinwheel-headwear is unaltered from his Marine-column escort role earlier — he was walking with the Marines to ensure their behavior. Genzo (page 12, panel 4): “Her money is going to save Coco Village!!!! You have no right to confiscate it, Navy man!!!” The headman-defies-the-government register is on-page; the chapter’s villager-side resistance fires. Nezumi: “A village headman defying the Navy!! What’s this?” Nami (page 12, panel 6, close-up, sweat-drenched): ”…!? How… how did you know!!?” / “Mr. Genzo…” — Nami realizes the villagers knew her plan.

Page 13 — Genzo’s exposition: “Everyone in the village knows what you’re doing… We couldn’t believe you would join Arlong just for money. So we pressed Nojiko. So we pretended we didn’t know. Because you knew we were counting on you. But we didn’t want you to feel you couldn’t give up and flee…” The chapter installs the villagers-pretended-not-to-know doctrine — for eight years, the village has been performing ignorance to preserve Nami’s strategic cover. The villagers’ apparent indifference / witch reputation (Ch. 70) is performance, not real. The chapter inverts the Ch. 70 Nami-is-feared-as-Arlong’s-witch configuration: the witch reputation is village-protective theater. Page 14 — Genzo defuses-and-bluffs: “If you’re not going to save this village… then get the heck out of here!! If you linger here, Arlong will have your ship!” Nezumi (mock-scoff, “Arlong? Oh, I doubt that very much. Hyik hyik hyik…”) — the Marine’s Arlong-doesn’t-care-about-me reflex exposes Nezumi’s working knowledge of Arlong’s preferences. Genzo’s trap: “It’s not a grain of rice, it’s 100 million berries!!! It’s impossible for you not to find it!!” Nami (page 14, panel 3, “You still haven’t found it!!?” — surprised) — the village’s gallows-bluff register has been deployed without coordination. Nezumi (page 14, panel 4-5, evil-grin, “HA HA HA HA!!” / “Could it be!!?” / “What? A lucky guess. Hyik hyik hyik…” / “How do you know how much she has!!?”) — Nezumi accidentally reveals he knows the exact amount of Nami’s cache (Arlong told him).

Page 15 — Genzo’s chapter-pivot question: “DID ARLONG SEND YOU HERE!!?” Nezumi (panel 1, deflecting, “That’s absurd. We are simply confiscating stolen property from a thief.”) — the chapter’s structural inversion. Nami (panel 2, “ARLONG!!” — eye-pop close-up): “HAS THE NAVY LOWERED ITSELF TO SERVE A PIRATE!!?” Nezumi (panel 3, “YOU ROTTEN WEASEL!!!”) — followed immediately by “They’re impeding the search. Page 16 — RAARRR — cut to Arlong Park (gate-shot, ARLONG PARK sign visible). Nami at the park, having confronted Arlong: “To steal my treasure!!! You sent those Navy men…” Arlong (interior shot, hands-on-hips, jagged-shark-teeth visible): “You look angry.” / “My precious navigator! What’s wrong!?” — performs ignorance. “WAP!!” — Nami slaps him (or attacks him). “WHY!!? YOU ALWAYS SAID YOU’D DIE BEFORE YOU’D BREAK YOUR PROMISE!!” / Arlong (page 16, panel 6, looming): “Huh? Page 17 — Arlong massive-mouth close-up (WOOOOO horn SFX background): “Don’t treat me like a fool!!! You sent the Navy to steal my money!!” / “WAP!!!” (Nami slap). “When did I… ever break my promise!!! Tell me!!!” — Arlong’s counter-accusation: Nami sent the Navy to steal his money (the cache is Arlong’s-by-Marine-cover in Arlong’s framing). The chapter’s villain-doctrine peak: Arlong publicly insists on his promise-keeping while having just orchestrated the promise-breaking through Marine cover. The Arlong-Pirates laugh in the background (“HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!”). The rough depicts a chaotic harbor scene with a small figure tumbling on water (apparent boat-wreck or splash) and a villager (Japanese: 村人) observing with text: “何だ?! 港の方ですごい音がしたぞ!!” (“What’s that?! There was a huge sound from the harbor!!”). The storyboard is a next-chapter teaser for the harbor commotion (likely the Mohmoo or the Straw Hat arrival in Cocoyasi).

• Nami has been working an eight-year strategic plan to ransom Coco Village for 100M berries from Arlong (pages 1-5). Orphaned at 10 by Arlong, joined Arlong’s crew as a cartographer-thief, has spent 8 years stealing pirate-treasure as the only mechanism by which she could pay Arlong’s price. The chapter is the structural payoff of the entire Nami-pre-canon set — every Nami-tell since Ch. 8 is now sourced.
• The plan is at the 99M-of-100M mark (page 4: “now there are only 7-million berries to go”) — Nami is one voyage away from freedom. The chapter’s tension: the plan is hours from completion when the Marine raid happens.
