Why it matters

The recruitment-by-witness vector is the distinct signature for the cook slot. Compare to other Straw Hat recruitments:

Forward-payoff: the moral-witness recruitment vector recurs for:

The Sanji recruitment is the template instance — the first time Luffy decides on a recruit before they’ve spoken a word to him. The recruitment is delivered in the panel layout (Luffy’s three-panel reaction strip: realize → declare → Sanji turns), not in dialogue. The pattern’s grammar: the recruit’s moral act is witnessed silently → Luffy speaks for them.

Each Straw Hat recruitment uses a distinct vector, but the moral-witness vector is the default for non-combatant recruits whose function on the crew is non-combat-coded (cook, doctor, archaeologist, musician). The signature-feat for these recruits is a moral act they take when they don’t know anyone is watching. Cross-link Straw Hat Recruitment Pattern.
