Why it matters

The recruitment-by-witness vector is the distinct signature for the cook slot. Compare to other Straw Hat recruitments:

• Zoro — duel-witness (Luffy fights with him / for him in Ch. 5-6).
• Nami — alliance-conversion (deferred yes, Ch. 14 → Ch. 95).
• Usopp — self-recruitment (Ch. 40, accepted later).
• Sanji — moral-witness (Ch. 44 here).

Forward-payoff: the moral-witness recruitment vector recurs for:

• Chopper — Luffy witnesses him caretake Hiriluk’s grave.
• Robin — Luffy witnesses her betrayal by Crocodile.
• Brook — Luffy witnesses him crying over his crew’s bones.

The Sanji recruitment is the template instance — the first time Luffy decides on a recruit before they’ve spoken a word to him. The recruitment is delivered in the panel layout (Luffy’s three-panel reaction strip: realize → declare → Sanji turns), not in dialogue. The pattern’s grammar: the recruit’s moral act is witnessed silently → Luffy speaks for them.

Each Straw Hat recruitment uses a distinct vector, but the moral-witness vector is the default for non-combatant recruits whose function on the crew is non-combat-coded (cook, doctor, archaeologist, musician).
