The seed
Note: existing vault data shows Pearl’s caption-card Second Unit Commander debut at Ch. 54 page 8 — the Sanji-side “battle commander” label is a different role-name applied in Ch. 60 by a protagonist-side voice. The Krieg-Pirates’ officer hierarchy expands:
| Rank | Member | First on-page |
|---|---|---|
| Captain | Krieg | Ch. 46 |
| Pirate-at-Arms | Gin | Ch. 45 |
| Second Unit Commander / Battle Commander | Pearl | Ch. 54 (caption-card) / Ch. 60 (Sanji-side label) |
The equipment-encodes-the-name tell: Pearl wears actual pearls on his combat-staff. The standard Oda name-as-prop device (cf. Buggy’s nose, Kuro’s claws, Krieg’s Krieg=war = cannons).
Forward-payoff
Pearl is Sanji’s actual combat-opponent at the Baratie. The chapter installs the Sanji-Gin emotional pair (mutual apology, page 2 + 16) and the Sanji-Pearl combat-pair implicitly through the page-3-5 Sanji-commentary on Pearl. The dual-pairing — emotional and combat — is the Baratie-arc’s Sanji-axis structural grammar.
