Gin’s character is established by the silent feeding scene: he weeps with gratitude over the food, names it the most delicious thing he has ever eaten, and considers himself unworthy. “I’m not worthy!!” (page 21). This establishes Gin as a character with moral interiority despite being a Krieg-Pirates officer — a setup-tell that he will later become the Krieg-arc’s moral conscience character.

Fullbody dialogue: ‘That pirate of Krieg’s escaped!!’ — Gin is named in the Marine pursuit-team’s reaction. ‘Three days of starvation, beat up seven of us during the escape.’ Establishes Gin as: (a) a Krieg-Pirates member, (b) half-dead from starvation after three-day Marine brig interrogation, (c) capable enough to overpower seven Marines while half-dead.
Ch. 44 page 15 — silhouette enters the Baratie’s dining room
‘FUMP’ — Gin enters as a silhouette in a doorway, head bowed, staggering. The mysterious-figure-arrival visual grammar (cf. Klahadore’s silhouette-reveal, Mihawk’s later silhouette-arrival) signals that this character will matter.
Ch. 44 page 16-17 — demands food at gunpoint, Patty refuses for non-payment
‘BRING ME FOOD. ANYTHING…’ / ‘This is a mess joint, ain’t it?!’ Gin’s stomach is growling audibly (page 16 wheeze panels). Patty performs the welcome ritual but switches to enforcement when payment is requested: ’…Can you pay?’ Gin draws a flintlock at Patty’s head (page 17 final panel: KLIK KLIK) — the pay-with-violence counter-position. Establishes pirate-customer-dynamics at the Baratie: the doctrine breaks at the gun-and-no-money intersection.
Ch. 44 pages 18-19 — smashed by Patty for non-payment (WAK-KRAK!!)
Patty smashes Gin with a double-fist overhead strike. Gin is broken across the chair, half-erased in the impact-blur. The Baratie’s No Money = No Customer enforcement is delivered in full.
Ch. 44 pages 20-21 —
secretly fed by Sanji in the storeroom; weeps over the food
‘WUMP…! EAT.’ — Sanji sets a plate of food in front of Gin in the storeroom. Gin: ‘I’m not worthy!!’ / ‘I never… ever…’ — devours the food (‘MUNCH MUNCH… CHOMP MUNCH GULP SLURP’ ), weeps mid-meal, names it the most delicious thing he has ever eaten. The chapter’s emotional pivot. Gin’s moral interiority is established by gratitude-out-of-proportion-to-the-favor — the food means more to him than the act-of-feeding suggests. Forward-tell: Gin is the moral-conscience character who will later refuse to kill Sanji on Krieg’s order, repaying the silent feeding scene.
Notes
Gin’s introduction is structurally the Baratie-arc inciting incident — a Krieg-Pirates officer encounters a future Straw Hat first , before the captain arrives, and unwittingly directs the arc-villain to the location. Pattern-cross: Buchi/Sham preceded Klahadore; Cabaji/Mohji preceded Buggy; Gin now precedes Krieg. The minor-officer-encounter-as-inciting-incident arc-grammar is established.
