Forward-projection (off-canon-of-current-read-order, do not surface in narrative-current vault notes until on-page): Benn Beckman is the first mate of Red-Hair Pirates — Shanks’s right-hand. Tall, lean, smokes, carries a rifle. First on-page appearance is later in the series (full naming + face).
As of Ch. 60: a name on a popularity-poll list with no portrait or context. The poll’s rank-6 placement (above Buggy, Usopp, Kuro, Kuina) implies he was on-page somewhere in Chapters 1-59 the reader was meant to remember — the only candidate is the unnamed Shanks’s-crewmate of Ch. 1 (the tall lean smoker beside Shanks in the bar scenes). The poll paratextually canonizes that unnamed background-character as Benn Beckman.

Pays off the Ch. 60 popularity-poll / Ch. 65 “highest-IQ first mate” paratext: the unnamed Ch.1 Shanks’s-crewmate is now on-page as Shanks’s right hand.
