The seed
Paratextual canonization as a recurring Oda technique:
- First-named characters (no prior on-page name): Benn Beckman (rank 6), Pearl (rank ~14), Yasopp (named outside Usopp’s Ch. 25 reference), Bell-mère (named outside Nami’s Ch. 50 cry), Makino (named outside Ch. 1’s bartender appearance — first proper-name).
- Ensemble-canon installation: the entire East-Blue cast is presented as a single ensemble with a vote-count hierarchy — the readers’ selection of the cast’s canonical importance ranking is made explicit.
- Posthumous ranking: Kuina (rank 10) is the first posthumous character in the popularity-poll grammar. The dead-character-can-be-canonically-popular doctrine installs.
Forward-payoff
The popularity-poll-as-paratextual-canonization device recurs every ~50-100 chapters across the series; each poll’s lower-ranks introduce or reaffirm characters from the latest arc.
