Baratie (バラティエ) is a coinage that fuses Japanese *bara* (バラ, 'rose') with the French suffix *-tie / -terie* (-ery, -shop, as in *patisserie*, *charcuterie*). Roughly 'Rose-erie' / 'Rose Restaurant' — the ship is a rose-painted-fish-shaped floating French-style restaurant; the rose motif appears in the railings and stained-glass roses on the building. Captain Zeff and the cooks operate in a French-coded culinary tradition (Sanji's later French food-naming is the payoff). Sometimes connected via folk-etymology to Italian *baratto* (barter) but the Japanese rose + French restaurant-suffix reading is the dominant one cited.
