Summary

The chapter opens on the Buggy-Pirates cover splash (page 1, Part 18: “Rampage!! Sleepwalking Ritchie”) — Richie mid-roar with eyes closed (sleepwalking), Mohji waving from a small moonlit inset. Then back to the Baratie’s floating-restaurant deck (page 2): the cooks and pirates stand among the wreckage; “WOOOOO!!” SFX of the still-raging fires; the Baratie’s hull listing. A cook narrates the chapter’s premise — “Repaying a debt!?” — and on the deck, Sanji (bloody, wobbling, head bowed) speaks his on-page debt-thesis line to Zeff: “If you hadn’t eaten your own foot for my sake, you’d never have lost to these fools!! / Sanji! I don’t want any favors. / Who did whom the favor? / I’m not so pathetic that I need a baby eggplant to protect me!!” (page 2, panels 2-5). The Ch. 56-58 backstory — Zeff cannibalized his own leg to save the starving boy-Sanji — is named in single-line dialogue in the present-tense.

The cooks at the back recap (page 3, panels 1-4): “So THAT’S why he’s so protective of this grub joint… So Sanji wouldn’t starve. Chef ate his foot… Sanji looks shaky!! …He was paying chef back!! Who’d a thunk that those two, who fight like cats ‘n dogs, had such a bond?” Luffy watches, silent (page 3, panel 5: ”…”). Zeff, frustrated, demands (page 3, panel 6): “Why did you get up, Sanji!!? Why…”

Pearl — the Krieg officer Sanji has been fighting — taunts (page 4, panels 1-3): “You can’t possibly win, you know!!? So you want some more of Pearl’s surprises!!! Ha ha ha!” In the background, a sweating Don Krieg approves (page 4, panel 4-5): “Am I wrong, Don Krieg!!? And whatever the prize, the winner crushes the competition!! / In this world, it’s winner-take-all!! Losers get nothing!!” Zoro (off to the side, headband-on, arms crossed) responds (page 4, panel 6): “No, that’s true.” — endorsing Krieg’s premise.

Krieg turns to Gin (page 5, panel 1): “Right, Gin!!?” — pressing the loyalty-test on his Pirate-at-Arms. Pearl restates the inevitability (page 5, panels 2-4): “So why are you standing up!? You’re just wasting your strength. We’re gonna crush you and there’s nothing you can do about it. I don’t even need to ask… you’re the clear leader in ruthlessness!!” Sanji’s reply (page 5, panels 5-7, full-bottom): “This place can remain a restaurant. So that, for one moment longer…” + “SMIRK” SFX. The smirk-as-acceptance-of-death is the chapter’s first Sanji-character-pivot panel.

A Krieg cook reacts (page 6, panel 1): “Does that guy want to die!!?” Zoro’s wide-eyed ”---!!!” (page 6, panel 2) registers what he has just heard. Pearl mocks (page 6, panel 4): “That crap-punk… / Hah!! Your words are slicker ‘n polished silver!!” and prepares to attack. Krieg’s “Double-check Pearl… From now on, this is a pirate ship!! But it’s closing time for this dive!!” (page 6, panels 5-6) — restates the prize claim. Pearl shouts ”…SURPRISE!!!” (page 7, panels 1-2) and strikes Sanji with his iron-shield (“KLANG!!” + “THLUMP!!”) — Sanji is knocked off his feet (“OOF!” — page 7, panel 3). Luffy reacts (“YIKES!!! His fire’s getting big again!!” — Pearl’s iron is now flaming — “OW, HOT!!” — page 7, panels 4-5). A cook shouts “SANJI!!!”

Pearl bellows (page 8, panels 1-3): “It’s too hot!! Pearl! Put out your fire! What good’s a burnt ship!!? / This time it’ll reach the restaurant for sure!!!” — Pearl’s fire is now risking the Baratie itself. Pearl turns on Zeff (page 8, panel 4): “You can do something about this! If you don’t mind the old man dying, that is!!” The implied threat: Pearl will burn down the Baratie if Zeff refuses to surrender. Sanji (page 8, panel 5: “ERRRGH!”) tries to rise; Krieg pirates laugh. Sanji crawls to his feet (page 8, panels 6-7); Krieg watches, expressionless.

Luffy (page 9, panels 1-3): “Stop it, fool!! Don’t interfere!!” — a Krieg pirate is shocked as Luffy springs forward (“WHOOMP!!” page 9, panel 2 — Luffy mid-air kick). Krieg cooks: “That kid!!! What’s he thinking??” / “Is he nuts!?” Luffy’s signature SFX: “GUM-GUM…!!!” (page 9, panel 5). Pearl turns just in time (page 10, full-page): Luffy’s foot lands with a “WAK-KROOSH!!!” — but Pearl ducks — and Luffy’s ”…BATTLE-AX!!!!” (the Gum-Gum Battle-Axe, naming-by-attack) shatters the Baratie’s own fin/figurehead instead (page 11, panels 1-3 — pieces showering into the sea, the fin gone, the wreckage falling toward the water; cooks: “He shattered it!!! … The fin!!!”).

Krieg roars (page 11, panel 4): “Gin!! Blow a hole in Zeff’s head!!! That kid’s up to something!!!” Krieg cooks register Luffy’s intent (page 12, panel 1): “Chore Boy! What were you thinking!!!” Luffy (genuine-confused, page 12, panel 2): “All I did was bust the fin. Hey, I never touched you guys!! But…” Luffy (page 12, panels 3-4, big eyed smile-from-below): “I’m going to sink this ship.” Cooks erupt (page 12, panel 5): “WHAT!!? What did he just say!!! What!!?” Krieg (page 13, panel 1): “SINK THE SHIP!!?” The Baratie cooks (pages 13, panels 2-4): “Don’t joke about that!! That ship is ours!! GRAAAH!!! / That’s not funny!!! / Quit stalling and kill Zeff!!! Gin…” The cooks’ rage and Krieg’s panic land together — destroying the Baratie hurts both sides, but for different reasons.

Sanji (page 14, panels 1-3) grabs Luffy by the chest: “Are you crazy, you crap-kid!? Don’t you realize why I’ve slaved away all this time on this ship!?” Luffy (calm, “WAP…”): “But if I sink it, they’ve got no prize.” Sanji (panel 4): ”…!!” — registering the strategic logic. Zoro (panel 5) tightens grip on his swords ”…!!” Cooks (panels 6-7): “That’s stupid!! So you’re gonna die for this ship?” Sanji (panel 8): “You could never understand!! My enormous debt… and the way I feel about this ship…”

Luffy seizes Sanji by the chest (page 15, panel 1, full-width close-up — straw-hat-shadow over both their faces): “Getting killed is no way to repay your debt!!!” Sanji ”---!!” Luffy continues (page 15, panels 2-5): “…so you could throw it away!! He didn’t save your life… only a coward would do that!!!” Sanji (panel 6): “How else can I stop them from taking Zeff’s ship!!?”

Krieg (page 16, panels 1-2): “It was your misfortune to meet up with… Don Krieg’s pirates. Now stop squabbling, you two. There’s nothing you can do now! Not when we’ve got our hostage!!” Pearl (page 16, panels 3-5) reignites his fire-shield (“KLUNK… KLANG!! KLANG!!”): “…this fire pearl!!! Now burn and die with…” — Pearl is bearing down on Sanji and Zeff for the kill-stroke.

Sudden inversion (page 17): Krieg pirate “WHA—!!?”; Gin’s headband and downcast face (panel 1, ”…!!”); a “WHOA” SFX; Gin swings his twin tonfa-clubs (page 17, panel 2 — large central panel: “KLANG” — Pearl’s iron-shield is shattered, the tonfa heads buried into Pearl’s chest-armor — Pearl mid-scream, fragments flying). Sanji and Luffy stare (page 17, panel 4): “GIN!!!?”

The chapter ends. The Ch. 56-58 backstory is named in present-tense dialogue. The peg-leg mystery (Zeff Missing Leg / Zeff Lost Leg Mystery) is fully confirmed in operational mode — the chapter is the acted payoff of the Ch. 56-58 backstory payoff.
  • Sanji’s “good reason for staying” is the debt to Zeff (page 14, panel 8: “My enormous debt… and the way I feel about this ship…”). The Ch. 45 withheld reason is unwithheld in operational dialogue. The chapter’s title — “Sanji’s Debt” — is the moral-categorization.   • Gin attacks Pearl (page 17) — the chapter’s terminal beat. Gin strikes Pearl in the iron-shield with his twin tonfa-clubs, shattering Pearl’s armor, in direct defiance of Krieg’s prior order to “Blow a hole in Zeff’s head!” (page 11). The Ch. 45-48 Gin-loyalty-conflict arc-thread breaks into action for the first time. The Ch. 50 “Sanji’s-mercy → Gin’s-loyalty” twin-character architecture pays off — the cook’s mercy and the lieutenant’s loyalty are both stretched past their breaking point in the same chapter, but only Gin’s loyalty breaks first (Sanji’s mercy-axiom holds — he is still defending the food-source, not abandoning it). Note: the chapter ends mid-action; the why of Gin’s attack on Pearl (was it to save Sanji? to save Zeff? to reject Pearl’s tactics specifically?) is withheld for the next chapter.

  • Why did Gin attack Pearl? — Was the attack to save Sanji? to save Zeff? to reject Pearl’s tactics specifically (the burn-the-restaurant threat)? to reject Krieg’s order? The chapter ends mid-action; the resolution is pending Ch. 60.
  • Will Gin be killed by Krieg for the defiance? — The terror-loyalty axiom on display in Ch. 49 (Krieg shoots his own crewmen for showing fear) implies Krieg’s response to defiance is lethal. Forward-question.
  • Can the Baratie survive both the fire and the structural damage to the fin? — Pearl’s fire was already spreading to the deck (page 8); Luffy’s Battle-Ax destroyed the fin (page 10); the “WOOOOO” fire-SFX continues throughout. Forward-question for the arc.
