- Name meaning
- 九蛇 literally 'nine snakes' (九 nine + 蛇 snake) — encoding the tribe's pervasive serpent motif (the Snake Princess, the Gorgon Sisters, the Yuda serpent-drawn ships, Hancock's snakelike powers). The people are modeled on the Amazons of Greek myth: an isolated all-female warrior race forbidding men on pain of death, leaving once a year to bear only female children — and whose queen (Hippolyta) abandons the nation for love, paralleling Hancock and the exiled Gloriosa/Shakuyaku. Members all bear flower/plant names.

Sapient-people / tribe. The Kuja are an all-female warrior people inhabiting Amazon Lily in the Calm Belt — “a tribe of woman warriors” (Ch. 514 p. 19). They live in isolation; their island forbids men on pain of death and the Kuja claim never to have seen one. Shown on-page first via Marguerite, Aphelandra, Belladonna, Sweetpea, and the elder Grandma Nyon (pp. 14-19). 九蛇 = “nine snakes.”

- The Kuja warriors find the mushroom-covered Luffy in the jungle, mistake him for a woman, and carry him to the village; the elder Grandma Nyon discovers he is a man — on the island where men are forbidden (pp. 14-20).
Amazon Lily (Ch. 515)
- With Luffy revealed as a man, the hard-line warrior Kikyo invokes the centuries-unbroken men-forbidden law and orders his execution; the Kuja chase the escaped Luffy through the city, racing to settle the matter before the Snake Princess Boa Hancock returns (pp. 11-19). Their all-female pirate ship — crewed only by the tribe’s finest warriors — is established (p. 18).
