**Chapter title — *Chapter 164: I Love My Country*** (p. 1). The title is the childhood-Koza line on p. 13 — *'Of course! This is my country!!'* The chapter's structure: the entire body is a Vivi-childhood flashback that retroactively explains *why she would cross the Grand Line to save Alabasta*, anchored on the rebel-leader Koza's pre-rebellion love-of-country.
**The entire chapter is a Vivi-childhood flashback** (pp. 2-18) — Vivi as a child (~age 12, before her undercover Baroque-Works infiltration), playing in/around Nanohana with the **Sand-Sand Band**, a self-styled child-bodyguard gang led by **Koza** that has appointed itself her protector. ***Vivi-cry-don't-die-for-me* doctrine install** (p. 12). Vivi cries (*HIK... SOB... PLOP...*) after the rescue: *'I was scared because you told the others to protect me with their lives!!'* / *'I don't want you guys to die for me...'* — the central emotional install of the chapter and the **origin of Vivi's princess-of-the-people doctrine**. The princess does not want her people to die for her. Igaram (p. 13): *'She was worried about her friends.'* The Strawhat-saga *Vivi-as-protector-of-her-people* mandate is rooted in this beat.
**Three-year drought tell — *'So it hasn't rained for three years. What of it!!?'*** (p. 17). Chapter-bridge into the present tense: Koza-childhood's *Someday, Yuba will enrich the kingdom* idealism is immediately followed by a panel of a withered desert village and a present-tense voice-over: *'So it hasn't rained for three years. Summary

Cover (p. 1): Django’s Dance Paradise, Vol. 30: “Naval Headquarters Trial Verdict: Death by Hanging” — Django stands before a Marine HQ tribunal of three judges; the verdict-SFX KOOOON…! lands and his cover-arc enters its death-row beat.

The entire in-story body of the chapter is a Vivi-childhood flashback (pp. 2-18). Young Vivi (~12, watermelon-patterned dress, pre-Baroque-Works infiltration) is being kidnapped by a gang of swordsmen in an Alabasta oasis village; her childhood-friend Koza and his self-styled Sand-Sand Band of kids charge in to rescue her — “Protect her with your lives, Sand-Sand Band!!!” (p. 3). Koza personally faces the lead kidnapper sword-in-hand (“You shouldn’t make grownups mad, kid!! Just hand over the princess.” p. 6) and takes a cut across the brow (pp. 7-9) — the brow-scar will identify adult Koza in the chapter’s final reveal.

King Cobra arrives with his Royal Guard captains Pell and Chaka (first on-page appearance) and routs the kidnappers (p. 10). Back at the palace, Vivi cries on Igaram’s hat (pp. 11-12): “I don’t want you guys to die for me…” — the origin of Vivi’s princess-of-the-people doctrine. Cobra acknowledges the Sand-Sand Band’s bravery (p. 13): “Your brave deeds shall not be forgotten. Do you love this kingdom?” Koza, beaming: “Of course! This is my country!!” — the chapter-title line.

Cobra and Igaram walk away (pp. 14-15) and the king worries Vivi’s heart is too soft for rule. Igaram pledges loyalty (“I shall serve you… to my final breath.”). The day after, Koza’s father Toh-Toh is commissioned by Cobra to found a new desert city — Yuba — at the crossroads of Alabasta’s western desert (pp. 15-16). Vivi sees Koza off as Toh-Toh shoulders his pack and heads west. Childhood-Koza waves goodbye, “You must become a great princess!!! See you, Vivi.” (p. 17).

The chapter then cuts to the present (pp. 17-19) — and inverts. “So it hasn’t rained for three years. What of it!!?” — the kingdom-wide drought is named for the first time, and the rebellion-trigger is canonized. An older Koza, now in turban and beard, laments to a present-tense Vivi: “I have faith in our king!! And so do most of his subjects!! But it was hopeless. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t talk them out of this rebellion. They’ve been driven into a corner!! They’re ready to die!!! The next battle will decide everything.” / “Please, Princess Vivi… STOP THOSE FOOLS!!!” (pp. 17-18).

Final-page reveal (p. 19): the Katorea Oasis, near Nanohana — current headquarters of the rebel forces. A long-jacketed, sunglassed man lies in the dark of a tent. “This kingdom… has gone to the dogs.” Caption: KOZA / LEADER OF THE REBELS. The childhood-best-friend who loved his country has become the man marching an army on his king.

Koza is introduced as the Sand-Sand Band leader (pp. 5-7), takes a brow-cut from a kidnapper (pp. 7-9), and declares his love of country to King Cobra (p. 13: “Of course! This is my country!!”). The chapter’s final panel (p. 19) reveals the adult Koza as LEADER OF THE REBELS at the Katorea Oasis HQ near Nanohana, the brow-scar still visible. The Alabasta civil war’s rebel leader is Vivi’s childhood best friend. This converts the war from a faceless-faction conflict (per Ch. 130’s newspaper exposition) into a personal tragedy: Vivi cannot defeat the rebellion without breaking her childhood best friend. Pre-loads the entire emotional axis of the Alabasta arc — Vivi’s I’m going to save my country mission is now revealed to include save my best friend from the army he’s leading against my father.

Cobra’s love-of-country test — a king who measures his subjects’ loyalty by their love rather than their fealty — is the good-king-doctrine counterweight to Wapol’s Ch. 142 short-sighted fool dismissal of the world-council. Open questions raised

What is the boss of the rebels? The scout asks “Where’s the boss?” (p. 19) and is told “Inside…” — and the inside-panel is Koza. So Koza is the boss of the Rebel Army. The chapter retroactively answers it within the same page, but the term boss is worth tracking (rebel-army-as-organized-faction-with-a-named-leader).
Where exactly is the Katorea Oasis relative to Nanohana, Yuba, and the royal capital? The chapter places Katorea as the current rebel HQ near Nanohana, suggesting the rebels have moved (the chapter implies prior bases). Forward-canon to be filled in.
What became of Toh-Toh and Yuba? The drought-bridge implies Yuba may have been hit hard by the no-rain disaster. Toh-Toh’s fate is open — he is alive when the flashback ends, decades-younger; whether he is still alive and in Yuba in the present is open.
Why is Vivi the one Koza is asking to stop those fools? Implies that Vivi has been in active dialogue with present-Koza — but the chapter doesn’t show the meeting. It is unclear whether the Vivi-Koza dialogue (pp. 17-18) is a flashback within the flashback (Vivi met Koza earlier in the arc?) or a present-day conversation we’re seeing in voice-over. Forward-canon to clarify.
Is the drought natural or engineered? The chapter names the three-year drought but does not yet attribute it. Crocodile’s Dance-Powder environmental-sabotage doctrine will answer this — but as of Ch. 164, the drought is just what of it!!?. The reader is being asked to wonder.
What’s the next-battle Koza references? “The next battle will decide everything.” (p. 18) — the rebel-army’s planned strike on Alubarna is implied but not named. Vivi’s mission-clock just got concrete.
Will Django survive the Marine HQ tribunal? The cover-story’s death-by-hanging verdict is a cliffhanger; forward-canon will deliver a rescue/escape/Hina-conscription beat.
