  • **Chapter title — *Chapter 164: I Love My Country*** (p. 1). The title is the childhood-Koza line on p. 13 — *'Of course! This is my country!!'* The chapter's structure: the entire body is a Vivi-childhood flashback that retroactively explains *why she would cross the Grand Line to save Alabasta*, anchored on the rebel-leader Koza's pre-rebellion love-of-country.
  • **The entire chapter is a Vivi-childhood flashback** (pp. 2-18) — Vivi as a child (~age 12, before her undercover Baroque-Works infiltration), playing in/around Nanohana with the **Sand-Sand Band**, a self-styled child-bodyguard gang led by **Koza** that has appointed itself her protector. The chapter is the *origin-of-Vivi-as-princess-of-the-people* install.
  • **KOZA — first on-page appearance (childhood and present-day)** (pp. 5-13 childhood; pp. 18-19 adult). Boy with messy blond hair, goggles, kaffiyeh-style head-wrap, watermelon-pattern poncho/shirt; leader of the Sand-Sand Band — *'Never underestimate the Sand-Sand Band, you lousy kidnappers!!!'* (p. 6). Stands his ground with a sword against an adult kidnapper twice his size (pp. 6-8) — gets cut across the brow before going down. Childhood-Koza's *I love my country* declaration to King Cobra (p. 13) is the title line. **Adult Koza, present-day, is revealed in the chapter's final reveal-panel as the LEADER OF THE REBELS** at the Katorea Oasis HQ near Nanohana — sunglasses, jacket-collar, the same brow-scar from the childhood cut: *'This kingdom... has gone to the dogs.'* (p. 19). Caption-named: **KOZA / LEADER OF THE REBELS**.
  • **Sand-Sand Band — Vivi's child-bodyguard gang named on-page** (pp. 3, 6). Koza calls his crew the **Sand-Sand Band** (Japanese: *Suna Suna Dan*, distinct from the still-off-page **Suna Suna no Mi** despite the name-rhyme). *'Protect her with your lives, Sand-Sand Band!!!'* / *'Yes, sir!!!'* (p. 3); *'Never underestimate the Sand-Sand Band, you lousy kidnappers!!!'* (p. 6). The gang's grammar — Koza as *Chief*, the kids as the *Sand-Sand Band* — pre-installs the Alabasta-arc *Sand-as-thematic-identifier* register.
  • **TOH-TOH — first on-page appearance, named.** Koza's father (pp. 13-16). Bushy-bearded man in poncho/keffiyeh, large backpack. King Cobra has commissioned Toh-Toh to **found a city named Yuba in the western desert** (pp. 13-16). Cobra: *'I am counting on you, Toh-Toh.'* Toh-Toh: *'Yes, my king. I will build a magnificent city for you.'* (p. 16) — handshake-compact. Toh-Toh also frames his role as the **representative of all the would-be travellers/traders** of Yuba (p. 15: *'And my father will be representing all of them!!'*). Caption-named (per Koza's dialogue) — Cobra addresses him by name twice.
  • **YUBA — named on-page, founding-compact established** (pp. 15-16). Vivi: *'Yuba?'* Koza: *'Right now, it's an uninhabited oasis. Your father asked my father to build a city there!! ...A city there would help a lot of people!!'* / *'A lot of travelers and traders pass through that place. It's the crossroads of Alabasta's western desert!!'* (p. 15) — Yuba is the future western-desert hub. The chapter's central piece of forward-canon geography. Map-panel (p. 15): **YUBA at the centre, four arrows radiating** to other Alabasta nodes (the *crossroads* visualization).
  • **NANOHANA — named on-page** (p. 19, location-caption). The kidnapping flashback and the Sand-Sand Band's home ground are set in/near a palm-lined oasis town that the chapter's final location-caption identifies as adjacent to **Nanohana** — *'The Katorea Oasis, near Nanohana'*. **First on-page utterance of *Nanohana*** — Alabasta's port-of-entry town and the forward-canon Strawhat-arrival point.
  • **KATOREA OASIS — named on-page, current rebel HQ** (p. 19). The chapter-closer location-caption: *'The Katorea Oasis, near Nanohana. Current headquarters of the rebel forces.'* (p. 19). First on-page rebel-army location — the Royal Army-vs-Rebel Army war (introduced Ch. 130 via newspaper) now has a placed rebel base, and Koza is at its centre.
  • **PELL and CHAKA — first on-page appearance, named.** Two of King Cobra's senior guards/officers appear with him during the rescue (pp. 10-12). Pell wears a beak-shaped mask/hood and a striped robe; Chaka wears a jackal-style mask/hood and a striped robe. Vivi addresses them by name: *'Pell, Chaka... what are you doing here?'* (p. 10). Cobra orders them to make medical arrangements for the wounded Sand-Sand Band: *'Chaka!! Pell!! Make arrangements right away!! And the other injured members of the Sand-Sand Band too!!'* (p. 11). **First on-page Pell + Chaka** — the Royal Guard's two captains, pre-loaded for the Alabasta arc.
  • **Cobra's *brave deeds shall not be forgotten* speech to Koza** (p. 13). King Cobra: *'Vivi is a princess, and my daughter. Your brave deeds shall not be forgotten.'* Koza: *'Of course! This is my country!!'* — the chapter-title beat. Cobra: *'Do you love this kingdom?'* — to which the assembled Sand-Sand Band reply *'Of course!!'* / *'Me too.'* (p. 13). Cobra (interior, walking away with Igaram, pp. 13-14): *'A ruler must sometimes make unpleasant decisions. I wonder if Princess Vivi's heart is too soft.'* / *'I shall serve you... to my final breath. It's good for Alabasta. That is good.'* — Igaram's pledge-of-service to Cobra is on-page.
  • ***Vivi-cry-don't-die-for-me* doctrine install** (p. 12). Vivi cries (*HIK... SOB... PLOP...*) after the rescue: *'I was scared because you told the others to protect me with their lives!!'* / *'I don't want you guys to die for me...'* — the central emotional install of the chapter and the **origin of Vivi's princess-of-the-people doctrine**. The princess does not want her people to die for her. Igaram (p. 13): *'She was worried about her friends.'* The Strawhat-saga *Vivi-as-protector-of-her-people* mandate is rooted in this beat.
  • **Three-year drought tell — *'So it hasn't rained for three years. What of it!!?'*** (p. 17). Chapter-bridge into the present tense: Koza-childhood's *Someday, Yuba will enrich the kingdom* idealism is immediately followed by a panel of a withered desert village and a present-tense voice-over: *'So it hasn't rained for three years. What of it!!?'* The kingdom-wide three-year drought is named on-page for the first time — the Crocodile-engineered environmental sabotage that drives the civil war is now canon. The next panels show Koza, older, lamenting *'I have faith in our king!! And so do most of his subjects!!'* / *'But it was hopeless. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't talk them out of this rebellion.'* / *'They've been driven into a corner!! They're ready to die!!! The next battle will decide everything.'* (pp. 17-18) — pays off the Ch. 130 600k-vs-300k civil-war newspaper exposition with the actual *trigger* (three-year drought) and the actual *rebel leader* (Koza).

Summary

Cover (p. 1): Django’s Dance Paradise, Vol. 30: “Naval Headquarters Trial Verdict: Death by Hanging” — Django stands before a Marine HQ tribunal of three judges; the verdict-SFX KOOOON…! lands and his cover-arc enters its death-row beat.

The entire in-story body of the chapter is a Vivi-childhood flashback (pp. 2-18). Young Vivi (~12, watermelon-patterned dress, pre-Baroque-Works infiltration) is being kidnapped by a gang of swordsmen in an Alabasta oasis village; her childhood-friend Koza and his self-styled Sand-Sand Band of kids charge in to rescue her — “Protect her with your lives, Sand-Sand Band!!!” (p. 3). Koza personally faces the lead kidnapper sword-in-hand (“You shouldn’t make grownups mad, kid!! Just hand over the princess.” p. 6) and takes a cut across the brow (pp. 7-9) — the brow-scar will identify adult Koza in the chapter’s final reveal.

King Cobra arrives with his Royal Guard captains Pell and Chaka (first on-page appearance) and routs the kidnappers (p. 10). Back at the palace, Vivi cries on Igaram’s hat (pp. 11-12): “I don’t want you guys to die for me…” — the origin of Vivi’s princess-of-the-people doctrine. Cobra acknowledges the Sand-Sand Band’s bravery (p. 13): “Your brave deeds shall not be forgotten. Do you love this kingdom?” Koza, beaming: “Of course! This is my country!!” — the chapter-title line.

Cobra and Igaram walk away (pp. 14-15) and the king worries Vivi’s heart is too soft for rule. Igaram pledges loyalty (“I shall serve you… to my final breath.”). The day after, Koza’s father Toh-Toh is commissioned by Cobra to found a new desert city — Yuba — at the crossroads of Alabasta’s western desert (pp. 15-16). Vivi sees Koza off as Toh-Toh shoulders his pack and heads west. Childhood-Koza waves goodbye, “You must become a great princess!!! See you, Vivi.” (p. 17).

The chapter then cuts to the present (pp. 17-19) — and inverts. “So it hasn’t rained for three years. What of it!!?” — the kingdom-wide drought is named for the first time, and the rebellion-trigger is canonized. An older Koza, now in turban and beard, laments to a present-tense Vivi: “I have faith in our king!! And so do most of his subjects!! But it was hopeless. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t talk them out of this rebellion. They’ve been driven into a corner!! They’re ready to die!!! The next battle will decide everything.” / “Please, Princess Vivi… STOP THOSE FOOLS!!!” (pp. 17-18).

Final-page reveal (p. 19): the Katorea Oasis, near Nanohana — current headquarters of the rebel forces. A long-jacketed, sunglassed man lies in the dark of a tent. “This kingdom… has gone to the dogs.” Caption: KOZA / LEADER OF THE REBELS. The childhood-best-friend who loved his country has become the man marching an army on his king.
