Summary

ALUBARNA / 11 YEARS AGO — chapter-pivots into a flashback (pp. 10-18). At the Alabasta throne-hall, a young Koza (caption: KOZA / VILLAGE BOY, p. 10) confronts King Cobra over the failure to save his drought-stricken village. Cobra’s doctrine: ‘Weather is controlled by the gods. Not even a king has power over it!! My commands only work on people.’ (p. 11) — the king refuses the omnipotent-monarch premise. Toh-Toh (Koza’s father, p. 12) slaps Koza for the violation of protocol; Cobra pledges crown-funded relief for Yuba (p. 12). Igaram offers to finance it personally (p. 13: ‘If we reduce our own living expenses… we can easily raise the money!!’) when Cobra cites kingdom-treasury limits.
Cobra reads Koza positively (p. 13): ‘What a fine boy. He would defy even the king for his people.’ Vivi (in the same pink polka-dot dress as the Ch. 142 World Council flashback) walks in; Vivi and Koza brawl in the throne-hall (KING CHOP!!!, DOOM!!) — Vivi blackeyed, Koza bloody-nosed (pp. 13-15). Igaram explodes in ‘How dare that brat lay a hand on the princess!!’ protective-rage; Cobra defuses: ‘It was only a fight between children!!’
Caption (p. 15): ALUBARNA / CAPITAL OF ALABASTA. On the city outskirts, Vivi and Koza fight to the death surrounded by ~20 hooded Sand-Sand Band children chanting RAH RAH RAH (pp. 15-17). The pair-grammar of Koza-as-chief / Vivi-as-second-in-command installs when Vivi wins and Koza announces (p. 17): ‘EVERYBODY LISTEN UP!! Return to present (pp. 19-20). Toh-Toh sends Vivi away — ‘Go home!! You heard me!! You’re making more work for me!!’ — refusing to involve the princess in what he sees as an unjust rebellion. Hooded armed men appear behind her: ‘Want some company?’ / ‘Hey, girlie.’ The adult Sand-Sand Band is now an armed civil-war cell, and they are pursuing Vivi. Toh-Toh: ‘What!?
