Structural lore — what Oda has confirmed about this. Mysteries (unsolved questions) live in Vault/Threads/; this is what the world IS.

What we know

Establishes the foundational physics of the Sky Island setting. In Skypiea, cloud is a tangible material: the “sea” (White-White Sea) is Sea Cloud and the islands/beaches/cities are built of Island Cloud — solid enough to stand, walk, sit, and construct on, yet soft enough to sink into (Ch. 239 pp. 6–11). Zoro: “That fluffy cloud stuff is this island’s foundation” (p. 8); the Merry’s anchor finds no bottom because the island floats on cloud, not water (pp. 7–8). This is the load-bearing premise for the entire Skypiea arc’s geography (later: Milky Road, Cloud End, Upper Yard) and a Chekhov’s-explicit setup — the sink-in property and cloud-solidity rules pay off in subsequent cloud-navigation and combat. Distinct from any single character; tracks the canonical fact that cloud can be matter in this world.

How the sky-sea and sky-ground work (Ch. 240)

  • Ch. 240: There are two natural cloud typesSea Clouds (behave like a sea; rideable — the Merry traversed one) and Island Clouds (solid, walkable ground that houses/towns are built on) (page 8).
  • Ch. 240: Both form when keratin particles hurled into the sky by volcanoes absorb moisture; depending on density they become Sea or Island Clouds (page 9). They contain a mineral called pyrobloin — the sky analogue of the Blue Sea’s sea-prism stone — giving them “entirely different condensation nuclei from normal clouds” (page 9).
  • Ch. 240: Island Clouds are cut for construction at the Cloud Quarry; compressed to achieve desired density to make “man-made clouds” (pages 7–8, 10).
  • Ch. 240: Milky Roads are man-made cloud canals/roads (the “big-noodle road” the lobster towed the ship along; beach chairs/slides are also milky road) (pages 7, 10).

Chronology / structure

The Straw Hats arrive on the cloud-sea and beach at Angel Beach (Ch. 239), discovering the cloud-as-matter premise; in Ch. 240 Pagaya lectures the full physics — the two cloud types, keratin + pyrobloin condensation, the Cloud Quarry, and Milky Roads — that underpins all subsequent Skypiea geography.

Open questions about this topic

  • Does pyrobloin share sea-prism stone’s Devil-Fruit-nullifying property? (Raised implicitly — page 3 worry about DF users sinking — not answered.)
  • What lies below the Sea Cloud’s surface, and where is the “seafloor”? (Pagaya: “no seafloor”; dial-shellfish live on reef sandbars — page 11.)
