Chapter 219: Masira the Salvage King

Summary

A wrecked galleon and a rain of skeletons have crashed down onto the sea around the Going Merry, and the Straw Hats are baffled — the Log Pose needle is pointing straight up into the sky. Robin dissects the salvaged skeleton (brain-surgery trepanation marks, ~200-year-old bones) and identifies the vessel as an exploration ship from St. Briss of the South Blue, set sail 208 years ago — meaning the ship has somehow been “sailing the skies” for two centuries. Luffy dives the wreck and surfaces with a treasure: a map of “Skypiea,” a sky island. Convinced a dream island floats above the clouds, the crew resolves to salvage the sunken ship to learn how to get up there, lowering Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro to the seafloor in air-barrels. There they bump into a rival operation already working the wreck — the Masira Pirates, led by the boisterous monkey-faced “Salvage King” Masira (bounty 23 million), who claims every ship that sinks in these waters as his.

• Who are the Masira Pirates, and are they friend or foe? Masira’s intentions toward the Straw Hats are unresolved at chapter end (p. 20 cliffhanger).
