The seed
Ch. 19 page 14, Shanks (Roger Pirates apprentice, teen): “They say the Devil Fruit was enchanted by sea devils. Whoever eats it gets amazing powers, but the seas turn against them.”
Why this matters
Two upgrades vs. earlier DF lore drops: (a) the agents of the curse are plural, named, and malicious — sea devils (plural; not simply the sea); (b) the mechanism is active — “the seas turn against them” (present-tense, ongoing rejection), not passive incompatibility. The Ch.1 framing was “secret treasure of the sea” (passive); the Ch.2 framing was “Gum-Gum Tree” (incorrect biological); Ch.19 is the first active-agent framing.
The “sea devils” plural is rough seed for: (a) Sea Kings as conscious agents who recognize Joy Boy / answer to Poseidon — confirmed canon; (b) the Davy Jones cluster (Old Roger Is The Devil, “old Davy”) as a deeper-than-DF antagonist; (c) Imu’s apparent ability to use the sea as a tool (puppet seas in Ch.1085+); (d) the eventual Vegapunk drop (Ch. 1069) reframing DFs as wish-images.
