The seed
Ch. 74 page 7 — Hatchan confesses to Arlong that he found Zoro tied up in a boat in Arlong’s waters and — out of (apparent) helpfulness — towed him to Coco Village without recognizing him as the Pirate Hunter who had just demolished Arlong Park. Arlong: “HACHI, YOU IDIOT!!! THAT WAS HIM!!!!”
Hatchan’s good-nature-as-comic-failure register installs — even as an antagonist, he is willing to help strangers in distress without checking their identity.
What it predicts
Forward-payoff: Hatchan’s eventual villain-to-friend conversion across the series:
- Sabaody arc (Ch. 491+) — Hatchan runs a takoyaki stand and is befriended by the Straw Hats.
- Fish-Man Island arc (Ch. 612+) — Hatchan is a friendly elder.
- Marineford (Ch. 605) — Hatchan’s death is one of the series’ more affecting villain-to-friend conversions.
The Ch. 74 good-natured-stupidity register is the emotional pre-load that makes the future conversion narratively legible.
