- **Choo's named long-range attack is the *Lip-o-Blaster*** (page 6 — *'But then you died from one shot of my Lip-o-blaster.'*) + later *Lipoweritzer* (page 16 — *'LIPOWERITZER!!!'* / *POOM POOM*). First on-page named-utterances of Choo's *lip-coded mouth-projectile* combat-vocabulary. The Ch. 75 *water-cannon-from-mouth* visual-feat is here **named-and-extended** into a *Lip-o-Blaster* (single-pellet, sniper-tier — capable of penetrating Usopp's torso area in one shot per the *bloody-corpse* fake-out) and a *Lipoweritzer* (multi-pellet, machine-gun-tier — capable of *POOM POOM POOM*-saturating an entire grove with a *Swiss-cheese* threat — Choo's line: *'I'll turn him into Swiss cheese.'*, page 16). Choo's combat-vocabulary follows the *lip*-prefix-codes-the-fish-man-species pattern — a Hatchan-Six-Sword-Style-style species-coded combat-vocabulary.
- Usopp Brave Coward Thesis
- **Usopp's *Captain-Tongue tactical lies* register persists into the Cocoyasi-grove fight** (page 7 — *'I do feel sorry for Nami…and I wish I could do more to help, but if it means getting killed, I'll pass.'* + page 7 — *'Sheesh, but what a terrifying species they are. They can flip houses upside down!! A whole village of 'em!!'*). The chapter installs Usopp's *talking-to-himself-as-bluff-rehearsal* register — Usopp narrates his own cowardice *out loud* to himself while walking through enemy territory, then rehearses what he'll say to Nami when he gets back (*'What should I say when I get back? Then I might look like I fought a real battle!!'*, page 9). The *captain-tongue* register is here **interiorized** — Usopp is not lying to others, he is lying to *himself first* and rehearsing the lie. Forward-pattern: the *Sogeking-as-identity-rehearsal* register at Enies Lobby (Ch. 367+) inherits this Ch. 87 interiorization-of-the-lie grammar.
- **Usopp's combat-arsenal expands**: *Ketchup Star* (page 8, named), *Hammer* (page 13 — *'USOPP'S HAMMER!!!'* / *WHAK*, a metal hammer fired from the slingshot at point-blank to Choo's face), *Rubber Band of Doom* (page 13 — *'USOPP'S RUBBER BAND OF DOOM!!!'* / *KRAK*, the slingshot's rubber-band weaponized as a face-snap), *Lead Star* (page 15 — *'THE DEADLY LEAD STAR!!!'* / *BLOOSH*, re-deployment of the Ch. 27 first-named-munition), *Deadly Fire Star* (page 17 — *'DEADLY FIRE STAR!!!'* / *FWOOM*, a flammable variant of the Ch. 27 munition system, ignited via a thrown booze-bottle's *grog*-fuel). The chapter is the **single largest named-munition install of the East Blue arc** — five named slingshot-attacks in a single chapter.
- **Usopp's *boozy-Molotov-finisher* technique** (pages 16-17 — bottle thrown via slingshot, *FURRR*, *BLOOSH* impact on Choo's face, then *'DID YOU KNOW THAT GROG BURNS!!?'* + *'DEADLY FIRE STAR!!!'* + *FWOOM* fireball). The chapter installs the **fuel-then-spark-then-fire** two-step Usopp combat-grammar: a non-flammable projectile that wets the enemy, followed by a Fire Star that ignites the fuel. The *first-on-page-named-grog* (alcohol) is here repurposed as **napalm**. Forward-pattern: every later Usopp combat-arc that uses a *fuel-then-ignition* combo (Enies Lobby *Firebird Star*, Skypiea *Tabasco Star*) inherits this Ch. 87 chemical-arsenal install.
- **Choo is defeated on-page in fire-finisher composition** (page 17 — *'DEADLY FIRE STAR!!!'* / *FWOOM* / *GAAAH!!!!*). The Choo combat-pair is **fully resolved** at chapter-close — Sanji's Ch. 84 40th-degree kick *softened* him, but Usopp's Fire Star *finishes* him. The chapter installs the **two-Straw-Hats-defeat-one-Arlong-officer** combat-grammar — Choo's defeat is a *tag-team-by-circumstance* between Sanji (who sank him without killing) and Usopp (who finished him in the palm-grove). Choo's status at chapter close: face-on-fire, ground (*GAAAH!!!!*), presumed-defeated. Final-state TBD by later chapters.
- **Sanji rescues Luffy from the pool and brings him to shore** (pages 2-5). Following Sanji's Ch. 84 dive into Arlong's pool to retrieve the chained-and-sinking Luffy, the chapter opens with the *KA-BLOOSH!!* of Sanji emerging from the pool with Luffy in tow (page 2 — full splash composition: Sanji in foreground hauling Luffy, Arlong Park in destroyed-courtyard background). Sanji's lines: *'Looks like we're the winners of this game.'* / *'Like I said, insignificant small fry.'* (page 3, to Hatchan/Kuroobi who are face-down — Hatchan KO'd by Zoro off-page; Kuroobi KO'd by Sanji off-page). The Ch. 86-area off-page resolution of Zoro-vs-Hatchan + Sanji-vs-Kuroobi is **canonized by on-page tableau** — both Arlong-officer KOs are visible on the pavement (Hatchan *DOOM!!* / Kuroobi *DOOM!!*) but the actual fights themselves are not shown this chapter.
- Arlong Money Is The Only Thing A Man Can Believe In
- **Sanji confirms Luffy is *not yet dead* but in critical condition** (pages 4-5 — *'It means he's not dead… yet.'* / *'I'll have to go back down to the ocean floor.'* / *'You said Luffy's half-okay.'* / *'But it looks like… that guy isn't about to let me.'* — Sanji to Genzo). The chapter installs Luffy's status as **resuscitated-but-still-chained** — Sanji can clear the surface beat but cannot dismount the chained weight underwater alone, and must return to the pool. Genzo and the villagers receive Luffy on the shore (page 5 — *'He's coughing up water!'* / Luffy *'HAAAH!! HAAAH!!'* / *'GASP!'* / *SPLAZT!!'*). The villagers' line: *'Those guys are incredible!! They defeated two of Arlong's best men!!'* — the off-page victories are publicly tallied on the beach.
- **Luffy's *rising-sense-of-hope* declarative** (page 6 — *'I feel a rising sense of hope… about this battle!!!'*). First sustained on-page Luffy dialogue since the Ch. 84 chained-underwater silence — Luffy is conscious, in pain, but verbally committing to *finishing* the fight even from the beach. The chapter installs Luffy's *resurrection-as-recommitment* register — the moment the villagers think the fight is *over* (cf. chapter-title *'It's all over!!'*), Luffy declares it *just beginning*. The chapter-title irony is foregrounded: Choo to Usopp *'It's all over for you!!!'* (page 12), the villagers' *'two of Arlong's best men!!'*-implies-victory beat, Luffy's *'rising sense of hope'* declarative — three on-page registers of *over* / *beginning* tension.

Summary
Cover-story Vol. 4 of the Koby and Helmeppo’s Chronicle of Toil opens with Kaya at a study-desk in twin pigtails and glasses, reading by candlelight while Helmeppo sleeps exhausted on a cot in the background — the cover-arc cross-pollinates Syrup Village + Shells Town: Kaya is studying (medical-prep per her Ch. 41 I want to be a doctor forward-pre-load) while the Marine-base chore-boys train.
Cut to Arlong Park. The off-page resolution of Ch. 84-86’s combat-pairs is tableau’d on the destroyed courtyard pavement — KA-BLOOSH!! Sanji surfaces from the pool dragging Luffy. Hatchan and Kuroobi are both DOOM!! face-down on the rubble (Hatchan KO’d by Zoro off-page; Kuroobi KO’d by Sanji off-page). Sanji’s ‘Looks like we’re the winners of this game.’ / ‘Like I said, insignificant small fry.’ (page 3) seals the officer-tier victory. Arlong rages off-frame: ‘WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!!!?’ / ‘HOW DARE YOU WIPE OUT MY MOST VALUABLE OFFICERS!?’ (page 4) — the first on-page direct articulation of Arlong’s officer-as-property register.
Sanji turns to the beach to deliver Luffy to Genzo and the villagers — ‘It means he’s not dead… yet.’ / ‘I’ll have to go back down to the ocean floor.’ — Luffy resuscitates (‘HAAAH!! HAAAH!!’ / GASP! / SPLAZT!!) and declares ‘I feel a rising sense of hope… about this battle!!!’ (page 6). Sanji must dive again to dismount the chained weight; the villagers ask ‘How’s it going over there!?’ — meaning the off-page Usopp-fight.
Cut to the palm-forest behind Cocoyasi. Choo (alive, bandaged, white-haired, kiss-mouthed) stands over a DOOM!!-face-down Usopp, declaring him dead from a single Lip-o-Blaster shot: ‘SMEK ♥ You gave me a hard chase. AND YOU WERE PRETTY FAST, FOR A HUMAN!! But then you died from one shot of my Lip-o-Blaster. How disappointing.’ (page 6-7). Choo walks away — ‘My comrades should be finished by now too. Guess I’ll head back…’ (page 7) — fooled by Usopp’s ketchup-star fake-death bluff.
Usopp’s interior: ‘That guy thinks he hit me with his Lip-o-Blister thing!! Hee hee… just keep walking, lips!!’ / ‘Success!! I’m saved!! Good thing I made those ketchup stars for just this kind of situation!!’ (page 7). The chapter installs Ketchup Star as the fake-death-projectile munition — a non-lethal ~Star that scales the Ch. 28-29 Usopp Brave Coward Thesis from verbal deception to weaponized matériel.
Usopp sneaks back toward Cocoyasi — ‘I do feel sorry for Nami… and I wish I could do more to help, but if it means getting killed, I’ll pass.’ (page 7). Then he sees a crying woman (orange hair, sun-tattoo arm — implied Nojiko, mistaken for Nami) and tries to comfort her: ‘Umm, don’t cry, Nami. It was a hopeless battle.’ / ‘We’re a team, aren’t we?’ (page 9). She corrects him: ‘It’s business. I had no choice. But hey, compared to a bunch of woman-hating crap pirates, he’s not so bad!!’ — re-framing the fight as worth-fighting-for. The villagers / Yosaku / Johnny applaud: ‘Umm, wow, that was one tough fight!!’ / ‘We’ve been waiting for you, brothers!!!’ (page 9). Usopp covers — ‘Umm, my wounds aren’t that bad!!’ / ‘Umm, you shoulda seen me fight…’ / ‘LET’S FIGHT!!!’ — and immediately collapses in shame: ‘THIS IS SHAMEFUL!!!!’ (page 9).
Usopp’s interior monologue lands the chapter’s character-axis (pages 10-11): ‘Luffy and those guys live every day like there’s no tomorrow!!’ / ‘The moment I decided to leave my village, I said goodbye to peace and security!!’ / ‘Because I wanted to laugh with gusto, like them!!! That’s the reason I set out to sea in the first place!!! That’s why they can laugh so heartily!!’ / ‘How could I ever laugh with them again!!?’ / ‘If I don’t fight with everything I’ve got… then I’m not worthy to sail on the same ship with those guys!!’ — the Ch. 28-29 brave-coward thesis is operationalized in a non-Syrup-Village arc for the first time.
Usopp doubles back to ambush Choo: ‘HOLD IT RIGHT THERE, FISH GUY!!!’ (page 10) — DOOM!! charge. Choo’s ‘You’re alive!?’ / ‘SMEK ♥’ (page 10) registers the surprise. Usopp’s ‘You think I’d let you hit me with your wimpy half-fish squirt-gun!!?’ + ‘DEATH BLOW!!’ (page 11) opens the actual fight.
The combat-grammar: Choo deploys Fire Star (page 12 — ‘FIRE STAR!!!’ — actually Choo’s name-card-style title for his Lipoweritzer preface? No — Choo fires ‘FIRE STAR!!!’ tag, but Usopp deflects: ‘You think that’s gonna stop me?’ and dodges-or-kicks-the-pellet). Then Choo lands a punch (KA-POW!! — page 12) and follows with what reads as a sweep that FWUMP!!‘s Usopp to the ground (page 13). Choo’s monologue: ‘Your brain must be as weak as your body. You should’ve just played dead. SMEK ♥ That’s right. It’s all over for you!!!’ — THWAK THWAK!! kicking Usopp on the ground (page 13, the chapter-title-line ‘IT’S ALL OVER’ rendered in-fight).
Usopp counters with Usopp’s Hammer!!! (page 14 — metal hammer fired from slingshot at point-blank into Choo’s face, WHAK!!) then Usopp’s Rubber Band of Doom!!! (page 14 — the slingshot’s rubber-band weaponized as a face-snap, KRAK / OOF!!). Choo flinches, Usopp flees in a BA-DOOM!! puff of smoke (page 15). Choo: ‘THE LITTLE COWARD. HE RAN AWAY!!’ (page 15) — assumes the fight is over.
Usopp doubles back with a stolen booze-bottle (WHAP… BOOZE!?, page 15) — fires it at Choo via slingshot (FURRR!, page 15) — bottle shatters on Choo’s face (BLOOSH!!, page 15) — Choo: ‘WHAT DID YOU SAY… WAS OVER!?’ (page 16) — Choo retaliates with Lipoweritzer (‘LIPOWERITZER!!!’ / POOM POOM POOM!!, page 16 — multi-pellet machine-gun-tier mouth-projectile) tearing up the grove looking for Usopp; ‘I’LL TURN HIM INTO SWISS CHEESE!!’ (page 16). Usopp dodges and lands the finisher (page 16-17 — ‘DID YOU KNOW THAT GROG BURNS!!?’ / ‘DEADLY FIRE STAR!!!’ / FWOOM!!) — fires a Fire Star into the booze-soaked Choo, igniting him in a face-engulfing fireball. Choo: ‘GAAAH!!!!’
Usopp pose-lands the chapter-title in his own register: ’…ARE OVER!!!!’ / ‘My easy days of… …pretend pirating…’ — followed by ’…I REALLY WILL BE A BRAVE WARRIOR OF THE SEAS!!! I’M GOING TO FIGHT!!! …KAYA!!! I WENT TO SEA TO BECOME A PIRATE!! DARN IT!! YOU’LL SEE, FORMER USOPP’S PIRATE CREW MEMBER… THIS FIGHT IS OVER!!!’ (page 16 — Usopp’s interior dedication-line invokes Kaya by name as the witness-recipient of the brave-warrior-of-the-seas promise; the Usopp Pirates are addressed posthumously as former). The Ch. 41 Syrup-Village dream-promise is here redeemed in active combat.
Chapter closes with Choo down (GAAAH!!!!) and Usopp standing in fire-pose (‘DEADLY FIRE STAR!!!’ full-page). The page-18 backmatter is the SBS Question Corner (sensei-question-and-answer column) — fan-questions about Sanji’s heart-cigarette-smoke, Belle-mère’s hairdo, Yosaku/Johnny vs Helmeppo growth, etc. Notably the SBS includes the line ‘I have high hopes that, one day, Kaya will become an excellent doctor.’ — Oda confirming Kaya’s medical-school trajectory on-page as a paratext sidecar to the cover-story Vol. 4 Kaya-studies splash. The cover-story + the SBS Q&A both point to Kaya-as-future-doctor.
New reveals
- Usopp-vs-Choo combat-pair locks in and resolves on-page (pages 4-17). The Ch. 75 Choo Kisser Fish-Man Officer one-officer-per-Straw-Hat forward-prediction lands on schedule.
- Ketchup Star named on-page (page 8) — first non-lethal ~Star munition; tactical-purpose is fake-death deception. Scales Usopp Captain-Tongue Tactical Lies from speech to matériel.
- Choo’s Lip-o-Blaster named on-page (page 6) — single-pellet sniper-tier mouth-projectile. Combat-vocabulary follows the lip-prefix species-coded naming (cf. Hatchan’s Octopus-Fritter Frenzy).
- Choo’s Lipoweritzer named on-page (page 16) — multi-pellet machine-gun-tier mouth-projectile. POOM POOM POOM-saturation-tier, capable of Swiss-cheese threat.
- Choo’s Fire Star named on-page (page 12) — note: not Usopp’s; Choo’s own name-coded mouth-projectile.
- Usopp’s Hammer (page 13, ‘USOPP’S HAMMER!!!’) — first on-page named-utterance of a metal-hammer-projectile from the slingshot at point-blank.
- Usopp’s Rubber Band of Doom (page 14, ‘USOPP’S RUBBER BAND OF DOOM!!!’) — the slingshot’s rubber-band itself weaponized as a face-snap.
- Usopp’s Lead Star re-deployed (page 15, ‘THE DEADLY LEAD STAR!!!’) — re-uses the Ch. 27 first-named munition with an added DEADLY prefix.
- Usopp’s Deadly Fire Star (page 17, ‘DEADLY FIRE STAR!!!’) — flammable variant ignited via booze-fuel.
- Usopp’s boozy-Molotov-finisher combat-grammar (pages 16-17) — fuel-then-spark two-step technique. Foreshadows later Firebird Star (Enies Lobby).
- Brave-Coward Thesis operationalized in non-Syrup-Village arc for the first time (pages 8-11). Ch. 28-29 thesis recurs in active combat: aware-fear + name-fear + act-anyway.
- Sanji rescues Luffy from Arlong’s pool (pages 2-5) — Ch. 84 Sanji-dives-for-Luffy tactical-rule pays off; first attempt completes the up-from-the-water leg but Sanji must dive again for the chain.
- Hatchan and Kuroobi off-page-KO’d (page 3 tableau) — both major Arlong-officers are face-down on the courtyard pavement at chapter-open. The actual Zoro-vs-Hatchan finisher and Sanji-vs-Kuroobi finisher are held off-page (presumably resolved Ch. 85-86).
- Arlong’s first on-page direct rage at officer-losses (page 4) — first time Arlong personally voices the captain-as-asset-accountant register about his own crew. Officers are property that has been wiped out.
- Luffy’s rising-sense-of-hope declarative (page 6) — first dialogue since Ch. 84 underwater silence; verbally commits to finishing the fight from the beach.
- Cover-Story Vol. 4: Kaya studies (Koby-Helmeppo Chronicle of Toil) (page 1) — first on-page Kaya appearance since Ch. 41; cross-pollinates Syrup Village + Shells Town character-clusters; medical-school trajectory pre-load.
- SBS Q&A canonizes Kaya-as-future-doctor on the same page-margin (page 18) — Oda’s editorial-voice ‘I have high hopes that, one day, Kaya will become an excellent doctor.’ aligns paratext with cover-story.
Foreshadowing seeds planted
Payoffs (seeds from earlier chapters that resolve here)
Mentions / appearances
- Usopp — primary combatant of the Usopp-side fight. Fakes death with Ketchup Stars (page 8); interior monologue lands the laughter doctrine / brave-coward thesis on pages 10-11; deploys Hammer, Rubber Band of Doom, Lead Star, Deadly Fire Star in sequence; finishes Choo with a booze-bottle Molotov + Fire Star ignition (pages 16-17). Status at chapter close: standing in fire-pose, Choo down (GAAAH!!!!), I really will be a brave warrior of the seas!!! interior commitment-line.
- Choo — primary opponent of Usopp. Lip-o-Blaster (page 6, off-page hit prior to chapter open), Fire Star (page 12), Lipoweritzer (page 16). Fooled by Usopp’s ketchup-star fake-death (pages 6-7, declares ‘But then you died from one shot of my Lip-o-Blaster’). Finished by Usopp’s grog-fueled Deadly Fire Star (page 17, GAAAH!!!!). Status at chapter close: face-on-fire, ground, defeated.
- Sanji — opens the chapter dragging Luffy from Arlong’s pool (page 2 splash KA-BLOOSH!!). Lines: ‘Looks like we’re the winners of this game.’ / ‘Like I said, insignificant small fry.’ (page 3) to face-down Hatchan/Kuroobi. ‘It means he’s not dead… yet.’ / ‘I’ll have to go back down to the ocean floor.’ / ‘You said Luffy’s half-okay.’ (pages 4-5) to Genzo. - Luffy — chained-and-pulled-from-pool by Sanji (page 2). On the beach coughing up water (page 5 HAAAH!! HAAAH!! GASP! SPLAZT!!). First dialogue since Ch. 84 underwater silence: ‘I feel a rising sense of hope… about this battle!!!’ (page 6). Status: barely-conscious on the beach, conscious-and-verbal, still-chained.
- Arlong — off-page first then on-page in rage close-up (page 4 ‘WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!!!? HOW DARE YOU WIPE OUT MY MOST VALUABLE OFFICERS!?’). First on-page direct articulation of officer-as-asset doctrine. Off-frame for the rest of the chapter — presumably preparing to take the field personally.
- Hatchan — face-down KO’d on the courtyard pavement (page 3 DOOM!!, HACHI…). The Zoro-vs-Hatchan fight is resolved off-page; status at chapter close: defeated, on-pavement.
- Kuroobi — face-down KO’d on the courtyard pavement (page 3 DOOM!!, KUROOBI…, KLK KLK). The Sanji-vs-Kuroobi fight is resolved off-page; status at chapter close: defeated, on-pavement.
- Genzo — on the beach receiving Luffy from Sanji (pages 4-5 — ‘Take a break, Mr. Genzo!! I’ll go down now!!’). Tries to dive for Luffy himself (page 5 — ‘I can’t hold my breath any longer!!’), pulled back by villagers. Status: helping resuscitate Luffy on the beach.
- Nojiko — page 9 panel-1 crying woman (orange hair, sun-tattoo arm). Lines about Nami’s painful choice — ‘Can you understand what a painful choice that was for her?’ (page 9). Implicit witness to Usopp’s shameful collapse and let’s fight!!! recovery.
- Nami — off-page; referenced repeatedly. Usopp’s ‘I do feel sorry for Nami…’ (page 7) + ‘Umm, don’t cry, Nami.’ (page 9 — misaddressed to Nojiko) + Nojiko’s ‘Can you understand what a painful choice that was for her?’ (page 9). The chapter is about the fight to free Nami even though she does not appear on-page.

- Helmeppo — cover-story background (page 1, sleeping on a cot in background of Kaya’s study-room — composition reads as East-Blue-side-characters at their respective post-arc registers). Continuation of the Vol. 2-3 Chronicle of Toil cover-arc.
- Koby — implied off-page (cover-story title-card reads KOBY AND HELMEPPO’S CHRONICLE OF TOIL VOL. 4). Not visible in page-1 splash; the Koby-and-Helmeppo-as-Marine-base-trainees premise continues.
- Yosaku / Johnny — on-page on the village-side beach with the villagers, hailing Usopp on his return (page 9 — ‘We’ve been waiting for you, brothers!!!’). Continuation of Ch. 84 swords-handoff-stay-on-team register.
- Arlong Pirates — officer-roster decimated: Hatchan KO’d (off-page, Zoro), Kuroobi KO’d (off-page, Sanji), Choo KO’d (on-page, Usopp). Arlong remains; the chapter sets the captain-as-last-officer-standing register.
- Straw Hat Pirates — Sanji (pool/beach), Luffy (beach, resuscitated), Zoro (off-page, presumed-victor over Hatchan), Usopp (palm-grove, victor over Choo), Nami (off-page). The crew is operating at full-roster on multiple fronts for the first time in the arc.
- Usopp Pirates — addressed posthumously by Usopp’s interior dedication-line (page 16 — ‘DARN IT!! YOU’LL SEE, FORMER USOPP’S PIRATE CREW MEMBER…’). The Ch. 41 crew-disbanded register is re-keyed as crew-witnessed-from-afar.
- Marines — cover-story setting (Helmeppo-on-cot implies Marine-base sleeping quarters).
- Arlong Park — chapter’s first-half setting (destroyed courtyard, pool, beach-side). Pages 2-6.
- Cocoyasi Village — chapter’s second-half setting (palm-forest behind the village, sandy approach-paths). Pages 6-17.
- Syrup Village — implied off-page (Kaya cover-story setting; medical-school-prep at Kaya’s mansion).

- Page 13 — Choo’s should’ve played dead doctrine + Usopp’s Hammer!!: Choo over Usopp on the ground ‘Your brain must be as weak as your body. You should’ve just played dead. SMEK ♥ That’s right. It’s all over for you!!!’ + THWAK THWAK!! kicking. Usopp pulls slingshot + Hammer payload — ‘USOPP’S HAMMER!!!’ / WHAK!! face-shot at Choo.
- Page 14 — Rubber Band of Doom!!!: Usopp deploys the slingshot’s rubber-band itself as a face-snap — ‘USOPP’S RUBBER BAND OF DOOM!!!’ / KRAK / OOF!! — Choo flinches; Usopp DOOM!! fleeing-puff.
- Page 15 — Usopp flees, then loots booze-bottle, then Lead Star: Choo: ‘THE LITTLE COWARD. HE RAN AWAY!!’ (Choo’s misread). Then Usopp grabs a booze-bottle from a destroyed cart (WHAP… BOOZE!?) — fires at Choo via slingshot (FURRR!!) — BLOOSH bottle shatters on Choo’s face — ‘THE DEADLY LEAD STAR!!!’ / SPURT / SPURT / UGH!!! (Lead Star follow-up to the booze-bottle wetting).
- Page 16 — Lipoweritzer!!! + Usopp dedication-line: Choo retaliates ‘LIPOWERITZER!!!’ / POOM POOM POOM!!! (multi-pellet machine-gun-tier mouth-projectile) ‘I’ll turn him into Swiss cheese.’ Usopp dodges + interior dedication ’…I REALLY WILL BE A BRAVE WARRIOR OF THE SEAS!!! I’M GOING TO FIGHT!!! …KAYA!!! I WENT TO SEA TO BECOME A PIRATE!! DARN IT!! YOU’LL SEE, FORMER USOPP’S PIRATE CREW MEMBER… …PRETEND PIRATING… …ARE OVER!!!! THIS FIGHT IS OVER!!!’. The Ch. 41 dream-promise re-articulated in active combat, with Kaya named on-page as witness-recipient and the Usopp Pirates addressed posthumously as former.
- Page 17 — Deadly Fire Star!!! finisher: Usopp full-page kneeling pose, ‘DID YOU KNOW THAT GROG BURNS!!?’ / ‘THIS FIGHT!!!’ / VROING!! / ‘DEADLY FIRE STAR!!!’ / FWOOM!! / Choo ‘GAAAH!!!!’ — face-on-fire fireball composition. Chapter-end victory beat.
- Page 18 — SBS Question Corner: SBS Vol. 10 sensei-Q&A column. Notable: Q about Sanji’s heart-cigarette → A: Be over 20 years old and fill your lungs with love. Q about Belle-mère’s hairdo → A: Women Are Brave hairdo. Q about Yosaku/Johnny/Helmeppo growth → A: I have high hopes that, one day, Kaya will become an excellent doctor. (SBS canonizes Kaya-doctor on the same chapter as the cover-story Vol. 4 Kaya-studies splash — paratext-and-cover-story align.)
Open questions raised
- Will Luffy be freed from the chain to fight Arlong? Luffy is conscious on the beach but still chained; Sanji must return to the pool to dismount the chain. Pending: the actual Luffy-vs-Arlong combat-pair opens.
- What is Arlong’s response to losing all three officers? Arlong has voiced rage at the officer-losses (page 4) but has not yet taken the field personally. Pending: Arlong’s personal combat-engagement.
- Is Choo dead or merely defeated? GAAAH!!!! + face-on-fire — chapter does not confirm a kill. Pending: Choo’s final state in later chapters.
- Where is Nami this chapter? Nami is off-page; referenced by Usopp (‘I do feel sorry for Nami’) and by Nojiko (‘Can you understand what a painful choice that was for her?’). The chapter is fought on Nami’s behalf without Nami on-page.
- Why is Kaya now in twin pigtails + glasses + nurse-style outfit? Kaya’s Ch. 41 farewell-wave was in mansion-bedroom register; the cover-story Vol. 4 splash shows her in student/medical-prep register. Pending: cover-arc continuation confirms her medical-school enrollment timeline.
- Will the Kuroobi and Hatchan fights ever be shown on-page? The chapter canonizes both as KO’d off-page (page 3 tableau). The actual finisher-moves and combat-vocabulary expansion are held off-page. Pending: Ch. 85-86 chapter notes when produced will backfill these resolutions.
- What is the operational purpose of Choo’s Fire Star naming (page 12) and its collision with Usopp’s later Deadly Fire Star (page 17)? Both characters use the same attack-name in the same chapter — possibly an Oda paratext-irony (the fire-pellet that didn’t work + the fire-pellet that finished the fight share a name). Pending: confirmation of intentional naming-collision.
