Why this matters
Bravery is not its own reward; bravery is the price of admission to the laughing-with-the-crew register. The worthy-of-the-crew clause becomes a recurring Usopp doctrine:

The doctrine inverts the brave-coward thesis from a negative (acting in spite of fear) to a positive (acting toward the right-to-laugh). Both clauses are operative for every later Usopp arc.
