The seed
The Ch 23 introduction is the seed for a long-burn character-pattern that runs the entire series: Usopp’s lies become his truths. Examples that pay off:
- The boy-who-cried-wolf gag → the Black Cat Pirates really arrive (Syrup Village arc).
- The “I have 8000 men” pattern → the Grand Fleet (Dressrosa arc).
- The “I am the brave warrior of the sea” lie → he becomes Sogeking, then King of Snipers.
- The captaincy claim (“I’ll be your captain!”) → he briefly is the captain of his own splinter-crew in Water 7.
Name etymology reinforces the reading: uso (嘘) = “lie” in Japanese. The character is literally named “liar”. Oda’s introduction-as-trait grammar plus the name’s literal-encoding-of-trait grammar combine to make this one of the cleanest character-coded foreshadowing seeds in the early series.

Why this matters

- eventual-truth-of-the-lies — Usopp’s defining grammar is lies that retroactively become true. The Ch 23 introduction is the cleanest possible setup.
