Page 14, panel 2 of Ch. 69 (Arlong to Nezumi): “Anybody squeals on you, I’ll gut ‘em!”
The line is structurally a Chekhov tell — too pointed not to fire. Arlong’s pre-emptive threat to anyone who would squeal on Nezumi pre-loads the structure: at some point in the arc, Nezumi will be in a position to squeal (either to Marines about Arlong, or to Arlong about something Nami/villagers do, or to villagers about Arlong’s pressure).
Forward-payoff (Ch. 79-80): Nezumi does flip his loyalty under pressure — he raids the Cocoyasi villagers’ treasure-cache (Nami’s buried 100M berry buyback-fund) under Arlong’s orders, triggering the arc’s climax. The anybody-squeals-I’ll-gut-em threat operates inversely: it’s the threat Arlong issues to Nezumi to ensure compliance, and Nezumi complies even when it means violating Marine duty (raiding civilians for a pirate’s treasure).
Technique class: chekhov-explicit — Oda gives the line a pointedly specific form (“I’ll gut ‘em”) that demands narrative-payoff.
