Nami I Cant Wait To Be Free

The seed
The payoff
The Arlong-arc reveal will confirm:
- Nami is currently working for Arlong as his cartographer-slave, accumulating the 100M-berries ransom to buy back Cocoyasi Village.
- Her robbing pirates career is the means; freedom for the village is the end. The Ch. 9 100M-berries-to-buy-a-certain-village (Nami Tangerine Village) is the price of her freedom.
- The Ch. 50 name-drop + freedom-state is the compressed pre-flashback summary of the Arlong-arc reveal — all three components (the murdered parent, the un-free state, the village-buyback) are coupled in two panels.
Earliest known caller
Re-readers identify the line as a freedom-motive setup. First-read readers may register it as a generic emotional beat without recognizing the structural pre-load.
Why this matters
The line decouples wealth from motive. Nami’s robbing pirates career reads as greed on first encounter (the Ch. 8 self-introduction, the Ch. 20 page-3 inner-narration); this chapter inverts the reading: the greed is instrumental, not terminal. The wealth is ransom, not profit.
Future-Claude: track Nami’s wealth-motive across the series. The freedom-not-greed clarification at Ch. 50 should be tested against later Nami-wealth scenes — does the freedom-not-greed read hold post- Arlong (when Cocoyasi is freed)? Or does Nami return to pure greed with the village-debt cleared? (recent-chapter: the greed reads more as character-bit comedy post-Arlong; the freedom-not-greed read is arc-specific to the East Blue era.)
Ch. 70 partial-payoff
The Ch. 50 un-free state is sourced this chapter: Nami works for Arlong, confirmed in two independent characters’ lines (Chabo page 16, Nojiko page 18). The Ch. 50 freedom-not-greed clarification is now operationally on-page — her robbing pirates career is the mechanism for buying her village’s freedom from Arlong’s tribute-tax. The what (Nami is un-free, under Arlong) lands; the how-much (100M berries) and why-her (Bell-mère’s death) components remain pending.
Ch. 79 un-freedom causal-chain completed
