Two adjacent chapters bookend the chapter where the crew arrives at Arlong Park. Both protagonist (Luffy) and operationally-embedded ally (Nami) publicly self-identify as pirates to enemy authorities in matched register — Well, yes. I’m a pirate (Nami to Marine) and A pirate. I’m Luffy (Luffy to pirate). The composition installs the pirate-as-declaration-of-moral-position grammar.
