Why this matters

First on-page Strawhat-saves-Marine beat — and a Logia-Marine. The doctrine is enforced even when the rescued enemy will resume hostilities (Tashigi is already drawing her sword for the next combat as Zoro pulls Smoker out). Pre-loads the Strawhat-Smoker arc-long uneasy-alliance-grammar.

Zoro’s I’d have let you drown / You don’t owe me anything / It was captain’s orders line is a debt-detoxifier: by re-attributing the rescue to captain’s-orders-not-personal-mercy, Zoro breaks the debt-chain that would otherwise bind Smoker to repayment — preserving the chase-grammar for future chapters. This is Zoro’s anti-debt doctrine — distinct from Luffy’s no-thanks-needed doctrine.
