Profile
One of Wapol’s two retainers in the Tin Tyrant Pirates. A portly man in a frilled coat carrying an arrow-quiver on his back. First appears in Ch. 131 as the figure improbably standing on the water (in fact standing on the submerged hull of the Bliking). Defends Wapol mid-meal and names Wapol’s Devil Fruit on-page: “He’ll devour you with the power of the Munch-Munch Fruit!!!” (p. 16). Implied archer (the arrow-quiver); abilities not yet demonstrated in this chapter.
Arc-by-arc updates
Drum Island (Ch. 152) — arrives at Drum Castle after Wapol’s launch, finds the kingdom-seat already changed hands
- Climbs the ropeway to the castle moments after Luffy launches Wapol (pp. 6-7). Arrives expecting to back up Wapol; instead, finds the Straw Hats and the village delegation in command of the castle. “So that thing that flew across the sky earlier was Wapol!!?” (p. 7) — confirms the launch was visible from the castle base.
- Final on-panel appearance of the Drum arc — dispatches from the chapter without a fight. Wapol’s officers retire from the story without further demonstration.
Drum Island (Ch. 148) — at Drum Castle with Wapol
- With Wapol at Drum Castle as Wapol blasts the flag and attacks Chopper (pp. 6, 11-17).
- Warns Wapol of Luffy’s incoming attack (p. 13): “Eh?” / “King Wapol, look out!!” — too late; KA-WHAM. Sent flying with Wapol and Kuromarimo by Luffy’s SHABAM!!! (p. 17).
- Back in independent-body form. The Ch. 147 Chessmarimo fusion has been undone off-page between chapters — Chess and Kuromarimo are once again separate persons standing beside Wapol.
Drum Island (Ch. 147) — recites Wapol’s breakfast; eaten and fused into Chessmarimo
- Recites Wapol’s breakfast inventory at Wapol’s command (p. 7): ‘this morning on the ship, you had one cannon sautéed in butter, one fresh cannon, a bomb, and an explosive salad. And in the village, you had one grilled house.’ — Chess as Wapol’s literal scribe / herald of intake.
- Wapol swallows Chess whole via the Munch-Munch Factory (p. 9, KRUNCH!! KRACH!! K-RUNCH!!). Chess and Kuromarimo are eaten alive as the Factory-input.
- Wapol fuses Chess and Kuromarimo into Chessmarimo (pp. 10-11) — Chess’s body provides the archer-frame of the fused officer; Kuromarimo’s afro/pom-pom heads sit piggyback stacked on top. ‘I am… the mightiest warrior in Drum Kingdom…!!!’ First on-page Devil-Fruit-induced multi-being fusion in the series. Chess is no longer in independent-body form — still alive, but as Chess-half of Chessmarimo.
- See Baku Baku no Mi, Chessmarimo Officer-Fusion Two-Into-One Beat, Wapol Eats His Own Men Cannibal-King Beat.
Drum Island (Ch. 146) — first archery use; Static-Cling-ignition combo
- First on-page archery use. Fires a flaming arrow (KREEK / SWOOSH / FWOM!!, p. 14) to ignite Kuromarimo’s hairballs stuck to Sanji and Luffy. Confirms the implied-archer read from his Ch. 131 arrow-quiver — Chess fights with fire-arrow archery.
- Combined-arms tactic with Kuromarimo. Chess (to Sanji, p. 14): “Hmph… your teamwork is terrible. You should know this about Marimo’s hair… It’s extremely flammable. …They were only a distraction!”. The officer-pair operate as a tactical unit: Kuromarimo sticks the targets with flammable hair, Chess ignites them. See Marimos Static Cling Kuromarimo Hair-Projectile Named.
- Articulates Wapol’s protocol claims and Luffy’s body to Sanji: “He is the KING!! The absolute ruler of this entire island!!” (p. 4) and “That’s right. He’s a rubber man.” (p. 7) — the chapter’s mouth-piece for Wapol’s faction. Defers to Kureha mockingly: “You’re in trouble.” (p. 11).
- Wapol’s faction’s tactical commander. When Wapol leaves for warmer clothes, Chess holds the line and explains the Static-Cling plan; when Wapol returns to attack Kureha, Chess shoots fire-arrows to back the assault (pp. 14-15).
Drum Island (Ch. 142) — flashback; Drum Kingdom Councilor under King Wapol
- First on-page reveal of Chess’s pre-deposition rank: caption p. 5 — CHESS — DRUM KINGDOM COUNCILOR. Distinct from the Ch. 135 post-deposition caption (Former Drum Kingdom Evil Chief-of-Staff). Chess was Wapol’s councilor while Wapol was king.
- Speaks for Wapol’s iron-fist doctrine to Dalton (p. 5): “Without strong leadership, this land would fall into chaos… and its people would die like flies. King Wapol just has different ways of doing things than the old king. By ruling with an iron fist, King Wapol is protecting everyone. This is how kingdoms are supposed to be run.”
- At the World Council at Mariejois (pp. 5-6). Presents Wapol with Dragon’s portrait: “The revolutionary named Dragon… is spreading his dangerous ideas. In five or six years, he’ll be… a formidable enemy of the World Government.” — i.e., Chess is the WG-information-conduit of the Drum delegation. See Dragon Named At World Council As Revolutionary Threat.
- Re-asserts the realpolitik line on Dalton (p. 8) after the Council-flashback: “You call that politics!? Wake up, Dalton!! Politics is about power, not feelings!”
Drum Island (Ch. 138) — Checkmate chess-themed combat-grammar debut
- First on-page Chess combat — fires arrow-volleys at the Straw Hats (pp. 3-7). Operationalizes the Ch. 131 implied-archer read (the arrow-quiver) and the Ch. 135 Former Drum Kingdom Evil Chief-of-Staff caption.
- First on-page Chess combat-call — CHECKMATE!!! (p. 7). Chess names his kill-shot as a chess move. See Chess Checkmate Chess-Themed Combat-Grammar Debut. Critically: the Checkmate shot misses — the arrow is absorbed by the Lapin pack instead (p. 8). The ironic combat-call grammar (declaring victory on a missed shot) marks Chess as a competence-overconfidence-comedy antagonist.
- Writes down Wapol’s new royal decree (“Anyone who ignores the king, dies!”, p. 2) — Chess as Wapol’s literal scribe-of-laws as well as his archer, consistent with the Chief-of-Staff role.
Drum Island (Ch. 137) — flees the avalanche on Robson
- Mounts Robson with Wapol and Kuromarimo to flee the avalanche (p. 14). Named in Wapol’s command: “Let’s get out of here!! Get on!! Chess!! Kuromarimo!!”. Sided with Wapol’s abandonment of the villagers. See Wapol King Who Abandoned His People.
Drum Island (Ch. 136) — Three Officers reveal, shoots Dalton
- Revealed as one of the Three Officers alongside Kuromarimo and the defector Dalton (p. 15). Kuromarimo (speaking with Chess at his side): “Once we were equals. They called us the ‘three officers.’ You have no chance against the two of us.” Chess: “Hmph! That despicable traitor!!!” — Chess regards Dalton as a personal betrayer.
- Demonstrates his archery on-page (pp. 15-16) — draws back his bowstring (KREEK) and shoots Dalton with a single arrow (DOOM) the instant the villagers arrive in Dalton’s line of fire. The Ch. 131 implied-archer / arrow-quiver tell is now operationally cashed: Chess is a precision archer who uses his enemies’ own people as a distraction. See Drum Three Officers Past Peer-Trio Reveal.
- The Three Officers’ we know your weaknesses doctrine is articulated by Kuromarimo but executed by Chess — the chapter establishes Chess as the the-knower-of-the-weakness, the-executor-of-the-shot.
Drum Island (Ch. 135) — captioned Former Drum Kingdom Evil Chief-of-Staff
- Formally introduced by caption-box as Wapol’s Former Drum Kingdom Evil Chief-of-Staff (p. 15) — the slim figure with a bow, confirming the implied-archer read from his Ch. 131 arrow-quiver.
- With Wapol’s other officer Kuromarimo (Former Drum Kingdom Evil Magistrate), reports tracking footprints leading from the Straw Hats’ ship toward Bighorn (pp. 14-15). The two are established as Wapol’s surviving enforcer-pair.
Drum Island (Ch. 134) — ship’s lookout, Wapol’s return
- Aboard Wapol’s returning pirate ship as the ship’s lookout — spots Drum Island through binoculars and reports to Wapol: “No, Captain Wapol, but… it’s our homeland!!! It’s Drum Island!!!!” (p. 11).
- Depicted as a feathered/axe-headed figure at the rigging. His report kicks off the chapter-end cliffhanger — Wapol’s return to the kingdom that fears him (DOOM!!, p. 12). See Wapol Returns To Drum Island Cliffhanger.
Drum Island (Ch. 131)
- First appearance and naming. First seen standing improbably on the snowy sea surface (pp. 2-5) — in fact perched on the submerged hull of Wapol’s submersible warship the Bliking.
- Defends Wapol mid-meal during the attack on the Going Merry.
- Names Wapol’s Devil Fruit on-page: “He’ll devour you with the power of the Munch-Munch Fruit!!!” (p. 16).
- Carries an arrow-quiver on his back — implied archer; abilities not yet demonstrated.
Notes
- Named on-page in Ch. 131 dialogue (Wapol addresses/relies on him; he speaks the Munch-Munch Fruit line).
