Sister-note: Calm Belt First Named On-Page (Ch. 101 first-name install). This note focuses on the Ch. 104 Calm-Belt-as-exit-barrier operational re-framing.
The seed
Why this matters
The Calm Belt is the geographic prison-mechanism of the Grand Line. Combined with the one-way Reverse Mountain, once a pirate enters the Grand Line via the conventional entry, they are physically trapped — the Calm Belt prevents flight; Reverse Mountain doesn’t run backward. This is the cosmology that retroactively explains Laboon’s crew’s failure to return (and all pirate-crew lethality on the Grand Line). The Ch. 104 mention is the pre-load; the full mechanics (no-wind, Sea Kings, Sea-Stone-coated Marine-ship-bypass) are revealed in later arcs.
The chapter installs the Calm Belt as a narrative-stakes mechanism, not just a geographic feature — its first operational use in the series is to retroactively foreclose an emotional possibility (Laboon’s crew can’t physically come back).
