The seed

Why it matters

The “town at the center of the Red Line” is the first on-page seed of Mariejois — the World Government’s holy city, perched on the Red Line above Reverse Mountain. The Reverse Mountain entry mechanic (a tidal canal climbing up over the Red Line and down the other side, the Log Pose system, Crocus and Laboon at the entry) is not a town; it is a piece of fantastical hydrography. The Ch. 22 town framing is therefore either:

  1. Inaccurate map detail — Nami’s information is incomplete (likely; she’s pre-Grand-Line).
  2. Mariejois reference — there is a town at the Red Line’s center (Mariejois), but it is not on the entry path; the Grand Line entry is below it via Reverse Mountain.
  3. Pre-naming misdirect — Oda is having Nami articulate a folk understanding of the geography that turns out to be partially wrong; the actual entry mechanism (Reverse Mountain + Log Pose) is not in the Ch. 22 frame.

Most likely (2)+(3): Mariejois exists at the Red Line center, but it is the destination of the World Government, not the entry to the Grand Line for pirates. The Reverse Mountain entry is a separate infrastructure that bypasses the city. The Ch. 22 framing conflates them — a misdirect that is resolved on the Straw Hats’ actual arrival at Reverse Mountain (~Ch. 101).

Pending — payoff begins at Reverse Mountain (~Ch. 101) and is fully delivered when Mariejois is named (Jaya / Skypiea arc).
