Chapter 595: The Pledge

Summary

A roving check-in on the scattered rookies and the wider world after Marineford. At Sabaody Archipelago, Trafalgar Law lounges on his submarine and tells his impatient crew that the One Piece “isn’t going anywhere” — he’ll wait for the right time and won’t be drawn into the chaos Blackbeard is sowing; “I’ll take my rightful place when the time comes” (p. 3). In the New World, X Drake stands on a winter island that is “one of Kaido’s favorite islands,” assigned to guard it; threatened by a Kaido subordinate, Drake transforms into a dinosaur and accepts the job — “Sounds simple enough” (p. 4). On a spring island with broken gravity, Scratchmen Apoo’s crew flees a boar herd and finds themselves running on thin air off a cliff (p. 5). On a burning island, the giant San Juan Wolf whines while Blackbeard and his now-ten-strong crew — Shiryu, Jesus Burgess, Lafitte, Avalo Pizarro, Vasco Shot, Doc Q, Van Augur, Catalina Devon — bicker their way across the sea on a battered raft (pp. 6–7). Jewelry Bonney has been captured by a no-name pirate who plans to trade her to the Marines for a warship (“Akainu is on it”); the Navy arrives — but to seize Bonney herself, a Marine noting that “a cold shiver ran through me when I heard you’d run away from the government” (pp. 8–10). At Sacred Marijoa, Doflamingo reports to a government agent that Gecko Moria used the Shadow-Shadow Fruit to vanish during a sanctioned post-war elimination, and reminds the agent he is no one’s subordinate (p. 11). At the Birdie Kingdom in the South Blue, Chopper decides to stay and study the island’s medicinal plants and high-tech pharmacology, vowing to get stronger “for Luffy” (pp. 12–15). At Kamabakka, Sanji discovers “Attack Cuisine” and is set a trial: steal the 99 secret recipes from the island’s Kama Karate masters while resisting being turned into a bride. Recalling Luffy’s recruitment and his All Blue dream, Sanji accepts: “I’ll even endure this hell!!” (pp. 16–19).

• Drake serves Kaido now. A Kaido subordinate tells Drake the winter island is “a favorite island… of Kaido, one of the Four Emperors” and that he’s “been assigned to guard it”; warned not to anger Kaido (“greenhorn”), Drake morphs into his Allosaurus dinosaur form and replies, “If I take your head, will Kaido come for mine?… Sounds simple enough” (p. 4). First on-page placement of Drake under an Emperor’s banner.
• The ten-man Blackbeard crew, adrift on a raft. After the New World damaged their ship, Teech’s expanded crew — the original four (Burgess, Van Augur [‘Van Ogre’ VIZ], Lafitte, Doc Q) plus the Level-6 escapees Shiryu, Avalo Pizarro, Vasco Shot, Catarina Devon and the giant San Juan Wolf — argue over leadership, grog, and clothes (“I’m sick of these prison rags”).
