Etymology
Lafitte (later canon “Laffitte”) is named for the real French-Creole pirate brothers Jean Lafitte (c. 1780–c. 1823) and Pierre Lafitte, who ran a smuggling and privateering operation out of Barataria Bay near New Orleans and aided the U.S. at the 1815 Battle of New Orleans. The historical Lafitte’s image as a suave, well-dressed gentleman-criminal operating in plain sight of the authorities suits the manga character — a former West Blue sheriff turned silken, top-hatted Blackbeard navigator. At the Headquarters of the Umit Shipping Company, the top-hatted Lafitte oversees intel on the Revolutionary Army’s sabotage of Mariejois provisions (the crashing Bondolas), savoring the prospect of starving Celestial Dragons — “unprecedented times… I love it” (p. 14). A figure is addressed as “Commodore” in the scene (identity unconfirmed).
