Sharpshooter of the Blackbeard Pirates, “Supersonic” (Ch. 234, p. 18). Debuts in Mock Town, Jaya, carrying a long rifle and reminding Teach they were supposed to meet Lafitte there. Tall, dark-cloaked, deadpan.
Etymology
Van Augur is double-encoded. The surname likely nods to the historical pirate John Auger (Bahamas, hanged 1718), but “augur” primarily denotes the Roman priest who foretold fate by reading the flight of birds (Latin augur, the root of “augury” and “inauguration”). That bird-omen layer is paid off on-page: at his introduction the sharpshooter “Supersonic” shoots seagulls to see which ones were “fated to die” — literally divining death from birds, exactly as a Roman augur read omens from them.
