Doctor of the Blackbeard Pirates, “The Grim Reaper” (Ch. 234, p. 19). Debuts in Mock Town as a gaunt, sickly figure who coughs and rides a horse. Voices a luck-fatalist creed: “A man’s no better than his luck.”
Etymology
Doc Q is a bilingual pun: “Doc” = doctor (he’s the crew physician), and “Doc-Q” read aloud likely puns on the Japanese doku (毒, “poison”) — the “poison doctor.” His design is the Western Grim Reaper: gaunt, pale, black-clad, scythe-bearing, riding a sickly pale horse. That keys to “Death,” one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who rides a pale horse and brings death by disease — matching his sickness-themed Devil Fruit (Shiku Shiku no Mi, forward-canon) and his luck-fatalist creed, “a man’s no better than his luck.” His apples-and-doctor motif also winks at the proverb “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Source: One Piece Wiki (Trivia); Wikipedia, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
