The Fourth Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, named on-page for the first time in Ch. 440 (p. 17) as the crewmate Blackbeard murdered to steal the Devil Fruit Teach had hunted for decades. First shown on-page in the Ch. 552 Ace-origin flashback, introducing himself as 4th Division Commander; his death is stated by Blackbeard, not depicted. His murder is the “worst crime possible for a pirate,” first referenced obliquely at Ch. 159 and reconfirmed by Whitebeard at Ch. 434. His killing is the inciting act of Ace’s manhunt and, downstream, the Whitebeard–Blackbeard rupture.
Etymology
VIZ “Thatch” (サッチ Satchi) takes the alternate historical surname of Edward Thatch / Thache / Teach, the real Blackbeard (~1680-1718). Oda forks the historical pirate’s name across three characters — Teach → Blackbeard (Marshall D. Teach), Edward + prison-surname → Whitebeard (Edward Newgate), and the Thatch spelling-variant → this murdered Whitebeard commander — so the man named after Blackbeard’s alternate surname is the one Blackbeard kills. Oda confirmed the derivation in SBS Vol-49: a reader noticed the resemblance and asked if Thatch (with Newgate and Teach) was based on the real Blackbeard; Oda confirmed he based Thatch’s name on the real Blackbeard’s, but the similarity is “only in the name.” Confidence: high (Oda-sourced).
