Firsts
  • Ace's death (last chapter) breaks Luffy completely — bystanders cry his mind is 'crushed' and 'he could die'; Luffy is left catatonic, unresponsive.
  • Akainu (Sakazuki) immediately turns on the defenseless Luffy — 'You're next, Straw Hat!' — and Marco blocks him, declaring protecting Luffy is 'Ace's last wish' and ordering Jimbei to carry Ace's brother to safety.
  • Whitebeard, in silent fury ('voiceless rage'), unleashes a quake assault on Akainu that devastates Marineford; Akainu's 'Hellhound' magma-dog bites into Whitebeard, taking half his face — yet Whitebeard fights on.
  • Akainu's magma splits the entire Marineford execution plaza in two, cutting the Whitebeard Pirates off from their captain; the Navy HQ tower begins to collapse.
  • The Whitebeard Pirates order all functioning ships to the dock and retreat by sea, carrying the broken Luffy; Boa Hancock (with her snake Salome) frets over Luffy.
  • Cliffhanger: the Blackbeard Pirates — Marshall D. Teach and his full crew, including a giant member — emerge from hiding behind the fortress and onto the execution platform; Teach greets the dying Whitebeard: 'Long time no see! I'm glad I'll get to see you die, Pops!'

Summary

In the immediate wake of Ace’s death, the battlefield reels and Luffy collapses into a catatonic stupor — onlookers fear his crushed mind will kill him. Akainu (Sakazuki) seizes the chance and lunges to finish the defenseless Luffy, but Marco intercepts him, declaring that keeping Luffy alive is Ace’s final wish and ordering Jimbei to carry him clear. Whitebeard, consumed by speechless grief and rage, turns the full force of his quake powers on Akainu, shattering Marineford; Akainu answers with a magma “Hellhound” that tears away half of Whitebeard’s face, and his magma cleaves the execution plaza in two, severing the pirates from their captain. As the Navy HQ tower topples, the Whitebeard Pirates rush their ships to the dock and flee by sea with the broken Luffy, while Hancock agonizes over him. Then, from behind the fortress, a new force reveals itself on the execution platform: the Blackbeard Pirates, led by Marshall D. Teach, who gloats at the chance to watch Whitebeard die.
