- Buccaneer — the real-world 17th–18th-c. Caribbean privateers/pirates. The word descends from the Arawak buccan / French boucan (a wooden frame for slow-smoking hunted meat) via boucanier ('one who cures meat on a boucan') — the French feral-cattle hunters of Hispaniola who turned sea-raider. A hunting/meat-smoking term that came to name the people themselves; resonant with Oda's Buccaneers, a giant-blooded, hardy people who were instead the HUNTED — paraded as 'grand prize' game in the God Valley manhunt and reduced to a slave caste.

Etymology
- Buccaneer (real-world): the privateers/pirates who operated in the Caribbean during the 17th–18th centuries. The word descends from the Arawak/Taino buccan — a wooden frame for slow-smoking or barbecuing hunted meat — adopted into French as boucan; the French feral-cattle hunters of Hispaniola who used it were boucaniers, anglicized to buccaneers when those hunters turned to sea-raiding. The term thus names a people for a hunting / meat-curing lifestyle.
- Resonance: Oda inverts the source meaning. Where real buccaneers were hunters, his Buccaneers are the hunted — a giant-blooded, unusually large and “hardy” people prized as slave-stock and paraded as the “grand prize” of the God Valley Native-Hunting Competition (Ch. 1095 p.15), reduced to a slave caste over an ancient “grave crime.”
