The Recurring Eye Motif

Do the distinctive eyes drawn on Imu, Big Mom, Mihawk, and others form ONE meaningful motif — or is the fandom conflating several separate eye-designs that mean different things?

The question

Are the distinctive ringed and patterned eyes across the cast one connected motif — or several unrelated designs?

The distinct eye-designs on the table

At least four or five separable things get lumped together as “the eyes.” Keeping them apart is the crux.

B. Imu’s disembodied-eye halo — a power, not a face

D. Mihawk’s hawk-eyes — a predator-gaze naming, probably separate

F. Shuri’s “bipolar irises” — the one confirmed plot-relevant eye

What actually connects (and what doesn’t)

• Real, in-canon: Imu’s ringed eyes ↔ the Lily-panel man (A); and Imu collecting rare-eyed people (F). These two are genuinely linked — an eye-based bloodline/power the ruling Celestial hoards.
• Weak / probably separate: Kuro (C, art coincidence), Mihawk (D, predator-archetype), Big Mom (E — really the Three-Eye Tribe, a different mechanic), and Imu’s Gazing-Eclipse ring (B, a technique).
• Open question the Gauntlet will adjudicate: whether any of C/D/E belong with A/F, or whether the “everyone has the same eyes” reading is several distinct designs conflated. See the queued theory shared-eyes-motif-connected.

The stronger, untested hypothesis — an altered / apex-state eye idiom (raised 2026-07-23)

The Gauntlet above refuted the bloodline framing (“same eyes ⇒ shared family/race”). A different and more defensible reading was never tested: that Oda reuses a specific intense/ringed/blank eye-design as a visual marker of an altered, possessed, berserk, or apex-predator state — a nature/mode tell, not a family tree. The states line up even where the bloodlines don’t:

• Cavendish → Hakuba — his murderous sleeping alter; the eyes are said to change when the second self surfaces (Ch. 733, Ch. 758, Ch. 772).
• Big Mom in her craving-illness rampage — the wild-eyed hunger-pang state, distinct from her normal eyes (Ch. 829–Ch. 900).
• Mihawk — the apex-predator “Hawk-Eye,” drawn that way constantly (Ch. 50).
• Imu — the god-king, ringed eyes constantly (Ch. 1179).
• The Rain God “ZaZa” — the myth-deity the Holy Knight Killingham manifests over Western Village (Ch. 1182, Ch. 1187); see ZaZa The Rain-God Onomatopoeia Encodes Monkey D Dragon (theorized to encode Dragon).

If real, the common thread is state, not stock: the design flags “this being is operating in a non-human / self-annihilated / apex register.” Empirical status: TESTED (2026-07-23) — does NOT hold as one design. different drawn idioms*, not one recurring eye. (The Gauntlet’s “refuted” closed the bloodline version; this closes the single-design version.)

Visual verdict

• Imu (Ch. 1179): the p.17 close-up reads as a naturalistic hooded human eye; the “ring/target” impression comes from his robe/collar swirl motifs, the throne-room floor summoning-circle, and silhouette single-dot staging — not the iris itself. (This softens the “ringed eyes” premise — the 1179 note’s “ringed staring eyes” may be describing the staging/costume; worth a second look.)
• Cavendish → Hakuba (Ch. 734 p.3): the opposite tell — he fights asleep, drawn with closed/sleeping eyes. (Round shapes nearby are Bartolomeo’s goggles.)
• Big Mom (Ch. 866): two Big-Mom-specific designs — spiral “guru-guru” ecstasy eyes (p.14) and blank-white hollow “God of Disaster” berserk eyes (p.17). Distinctive, but blank (not ringed) and hers alone.
• Mihawk (Ch. 52 p.1): a naturalistic raptor eye (iris + pupil), ring-ish only at far-shot; breaks up close.
• The Rain God ZaZa (Ch. 1182 p.14, Ch. 1187): downcast, half-lidded weeping-goddess eyes; the round elements are pearl-bead strings.
• Kuro (Ch. 32): the “rings” are his glasses; the eyes behind are ordinary.

Conclusion — not supported as a single design. But the technique is real: Oda does give several of these characters distinctive altered/berserk-state eyes (esp. Big Mom’s blank “God of Disaster” eye) — they are just character-specific designs, not one shared motif. What loosely links Hakuba and ZaZa is a sleep/dream theme, not an eye design.
