The theory

A long-running fandom design-observation, dating back to Mihawk’s 1999 debut (Ch. 50) and crystallizing after Imu’s silhouette reveal (~2018, Ch. 906): the distinctive/ringed eyes drawn on Imu, Mihawk, Big Mom, the ancient Zunisha, and Cavendish’s alter-ego Hakuba are not incidental art — they are one connected motif marking a shared bloodline, ancient race, or power, so that “everyone with those eyes” is secretly linked to Imu or to the Void-Century Ancient Kingdom.

It spread across r/OnePiece, Worstgen (“Mihawk/Imu” threads, May 2023), and One Piece Wiki theory blogs as a recurring screenshot-comparison meme (Imu vs Mihawk vs Big Mom vs Zunisha vs Hakuba), amplified by aggregator writeups (Dexerto’s “ringed eyes explained”, FandomWire, Sportskeeda). The chapter Ch. 1186 “bipolar irises / the Great One desires” line re-ignited it as a live agenda.

The steelman

Oda is famously economical with character design, and a specific double-ringed / concentric-circle iris recurs on a roster of unusually load-bearing figures — Imu (the hidden sovereign), Mihawk (whose very name and epithet are “Hawk-Eye”), Big Mom when she goes berserk, the ancient Zunisha, and Cavendish’s murderous alter-ego Hakuba — while being drawn on almost no ordinary characters. Imu’s ringed stare is the single facial feature Oda chose not to leave in shadow across 270+ chapters of silhouette (Ch. 1179 p.17), and the same ring-design is stamped on the “NEFELTARI D. LILY”-captioned face in Imu’s own memory-montage (Ch. 1179 p.6), tying the design directly into Imu’s personal history. The World Government supplies a motive: a Knight of God is dispatched to a backwater solely to collect Princess Shuri because her rare awakened “bipolar irises” are a trait “the Great One” (Imu) covets (Ch. 1186 p.7), exactly as the WG hoards poneglyph-readers and D-clan blood.

The honest hard version is narrower than the fandom’s blanket “everyone has the same eyes.” The only tightly-drawn match is Imu’s ringed eyes ↔ the Lily-panel man, plus the confirmed Imu-hunts-rare-eyes agenda via Shuri. Whether the yellow predator-gaze “hawk-eye” (a naming device), a 900-chapter-earlier villain’s art (Kuro), or Big Mom’s berserk rendering belong to that same design — versus being conflated look-alikes and separate mechanics (Big Mom’s orbit really being the Three-Eye Tribe’s poneglyph-reading eye) — is the taxonomic question the theory must survive.

The central strand SC1 takes two fatal kill-shots: the “Nefeltari D.
