Chapter 32: Cruel Fortune

Summary

On the cliffside slope above Syrup Village, Zoro is mid-duel with the Black Cat Pirates’ “Meowban Brothers” (Sham/Siam and Buchi/Butchie). The chapter opens with Nami narrating the new handicap to Usopp: “Nuts! He swiped Zolo’s swords!!” — Sham has stolen two of Zoro’s three katanas in a single feline swipe (“SWUP!” page 3) by dancing into reach and lightening Zoro’s load. Sham mocks the disarmament (“They’ll just slow me down.”) while Buchi sets up the brothers’ tag-team. The fight escalates into a sequence of paired-cat attacks — Sham’s claw-strikes and Buchi’s body-drops — that Zoro parries single-sword. Buchi’s “Cat-a-pult” / “Cat Strike” crashes ground around Zoro (page 7), his “Cat-astrophe!!” lunge cracks the earth (pages 8-9), and Sham launches him at Zoro again, but Zoro slips the strike at the last moment. Buchi notes Zoro is stronger than he reckoned. Usopp, watching, panics — “I’ll be a pirate-flavored pancake!! … If he gets me with one of those cat-whammies…” — and tries to provide cover by firing his slingshot (“KLANK KLINK BWOING!!” page 12). The brothers launch their combined finisher, the Pussy-Willow March (page 11), and Zoro blocks under a hail of claws. Usopp’s covering shot misses — and clips Zoro instead (page 14). Nami and Usopp argue about whose side Usopp is on; Nami eventually reads it as Usopp drawing fire intentionally. Zoro snaps internally: “If I just had even one more sword!! … There is no time to worry about others!!” Nami decides to bring Zoro his lost katanas — she sprints across the contested ground toward where the swords lie (“TMP TMP TMP” page 16). Jango intercepts: “No swords for you!” — he attacks Nami with what appears to be a thrown ring/discus and knocks her down (“SHINK!! … FWUMP”, page 17). Usopp screams “That was our last hope!! You PIG!!!” The Meowban Brothers freeze mid-fight, sweating — they sense someone arriving. A new silhouette enters: a tall man in a wide-brimmed black hat with circular glasses, walking through the trees toward the brawl. The brothers and Jango stammer — “H-He’ll k-kill us all! Kuro!! C-Captain…” — and the chapter closes on Captain Kuro’s full face: angry, glasses-pushed-up, demanding “WHAT IN NEPTUNE’S NAME IS GOING ON???” (page 19). The bonus back-page is Question Corner — Oda explains why Zoro wears a haramaki (sash), and identifies a recurring background-cameo character (“Mikio Itoo”) whose wanted posters have shown up in multiple chapters.

New reveals

• Zoro fights handicapped: one sword vs two cats — Sham’s opening move strips two of the three katanas off Zoro’s hip in a single beat (“SWUP!” page 3, panel 2). The Pirates Hunter’s three-sword style is taken away mid-fight; Zoro spends the rest of the chapter fighting one-sworded. The narrative creates a handicap rather than letting Zoro show off — establishing the chapter’s central tension (Zoro is on his back foot). The handicap is the same structural beat as Ch. 16 (Zoro hara-kiri pact vs Mihawk-not-yet — needs to find a way to win without his full kit), and is consistent with the Zoro Self-Wound Handicap pattern.
• Meowban / Nyaban Brothers paired-officer enemy team named on-page — Sham (called “Siam” by Buchi, page 10) and Buchi (called “Butchie” by Sham, page 6). They are the first on-page paired-officer fight in the series; the Buggy Pirates’ Mohji and Cabaji fought sequentially across Chs 11-19, not in tandem. The Black Cat Pirates’ organizational structure includes a paired officer rank that Oda will later mirror with other enemy crew structures.
• Cat-themed attack vocabulary named — Buchi’s “Cat-a-pult” / “Cat Strike” / “Cat-astrophe!!” (pages 7-9); the brothers’ combined “Pussy-Willow March” (page 11). All puns on cat / feline behavior — the brothers are Devil-Fruit-less but acrobatic-feline themed. Companion to the broader Black Cat Pirates feline-motif (the crew name, the cat-figurehead ship — pending later chapters).
• Usopp’s combat modality: slingshot artillery, not melee — he stays at long range and fires lead from a slingshot (“Eat LEAD, cats!!” page 12; “KLANK KLINK BWOING!!” — first on-page named slingshot pull/release SFX). This is the first chapter to establish Usopp’s role in a fight: support gunner from cover, never melee. The pattern locks in for the rest of the series (Sogeking, Kabuto, etc.).
• Usopp accidentally hits Zoro — covering fire goes wrong, clips Zoro (page 14). Nami’s recovery read — “Maybe HE saved US!” / “On purpose!?” (page 15) — is the chapter’s tonal beat: Usopp’s incompetence is recast as bravery by an ally choosing to read it that way. The Usopp-as-coward-who-acts-brave-anyway recurring read is being established.
• Nami volunteers to retrieve Zoro’s swords — “If I can get them to him, he’ll fix those freaks!” (page 16). Nami choosing to charge across contested ground for a crewmate’s gear is an early Nami-loyalty-to-Luffy’s-crew beat — pre-recruitment proper (she has not yet declared crew membership) but post-Buggy (she’s been adventuring with Luffy/Zoro for ~12 chapters now). • Jango is on-page as a Black Cat Pirates officer — wears heart-shaped sunglasses, hat with chinstrap, throws a ring/discus weapon (chakram) at Nami (page 17). Addressed as “sir” by the brothers and “C-Captain…” (apparently with confusion — Jango may be acting captain or sub-captain in Kuro’s absence). The hypnotist gimmick is not yet shown; he is presented as a fighter in this chapter, not a hypnotist.
• Captain Kuro arrives on-page in his civilian form — wide-brimmed black hat, round glasses, dark suit, hands in pockets. He is not yet in his “Captain Kuro” combat form (the cat-claw gauntlets are not visible). The arrival is silhouetted across pages 18-19 with the brothers and Jango visibly terrified of him — “H-He’ll k-kill us all!” (page 18). Kuro’s crew is afraid of him — the chapter establishes the internal terror before the external violence.
• Kuro’s plan has a dawn deadline — “It’s long past dawn, but… you seem to be having trouble following my plan.” (page 19). The Syrup Village assault was a timed operation. Whatever Kuro’s “plan” is (revealed in subsequent chapters), it has a schedule and the brothers are blowing it.

• Page 1 (cover splash / title page) — Chinese-themed character + Luffy + boy with club: An elegant woman in flowing Chinese-style robes (cheongsam pattern, hair in twin buns, fan, ornate chair with cloud-pattern arms) is seated; Luffy is sprawled upside-down in her lap with his bare foot in her face, mouth open; a small boy with a wooden club stands beside her, with a Chinese-style horned dragon snarling in the background. This is a self-contained cover splash (not a continuation of an existing cover-story arc, as far as the read vault can tell). The Chinese-fantasy framing is unusual for an early East Blue chapter and does not match the Syrup Village (European-coded) setting. Conservative read: this is an Oda mood-piece cover splash, not yet a story-arc cover. Open questions raised

• Why is Kuro in civilian clothes? — He is dressed as a butler/manservant (black suit, white collar, round glasses, civilian hat), not as a pirate captain. The contradiction between his crew’s terror of him and his civilian appearance is the chapter’s biggest cliffhanger. Pending reveal in subsequent chapters (the implication, per general One Piece knowledge but flagged as speculation here, is that Kuro has been undercover at Kaya’s mansion).
• What is “Kuro’s plan”? — Referenced but unstated (page 19). The dawn deadline + the assault framing implies a planned operation against Syrup Village / a target inside it. Speculation about Kaya is implicit but not on-page this chapter.
• Will Nami formally join the crew? — She is acting like a crew member (charging contested ground for a crewmate’s gear) without having declared. Recruitment cliffhanger continues — same one that’s been pending since Ch. 20.
• Is Usopp a future crewmate? — He is fighting alongside the Straw Hats against the Black Cats. Per the Straw Hat Recruitment Pattern (Luffy recruits the person whose island/village he saves), Usopp is the front-runner candidate for this arc’s recruit. The chapter doesn’t resolve this but lines it up.
• What is Jango’s role on the crew? — Addressed as both “sir” and “C-Captain…” by the brothers. Whether he is sub-captain, first mate, or acting captain during Kuro’s undercover assignment is unclear from this chapter alone.
