Etymology

Tsuru (鶴) means “crane,” confirmed by Oda’s stated habit of naming female characters after birds (One Piece Wiki Trivia). The crane invokes the proverb tsuru wa sennen — “a crane lives a thousand years” — a symbol of longevity and wisdom, fitting the venerable “Great Advisor” and elder strategist of the Navy. The wiki notes a second layer: 鶴 also puns on 吊る (tsuru, “to hang/suspend”), keyed to her Devil Fruit (Woshu Woshu no Mi, “Wash-Wash Fruit”), which washes enemies and hangs them out to dry.
