Why this matters
Cobra at the world council (Ch. 142) is the engaged-collective-action king; Cobra at home (Ch. 164) is the love-your-country king; Cobra confronted by drought (Ch. 163) is the honest-about-limits king. Both registers are anti-Wapol, anti-Crocodile, pro-Joy-Boy-aligned in the deep mythology.
The chapter-title line I Love My Country (Ch. 164) is the doctrine in compact form: Cobra asks Koza “Do you love this kingdom?” and the answer is the chapter’s title. Cobra measures kingship by mutual love between king and people, not by command-and-obey hierarchy. This is the structural counter-doctrine to:
- Wapol’s short-sighted fool isolationism
- Crocodile’s engineer-the-collapse manipulation
- the Celestial Dragons’ people-as-property register
The doctrine sets up the moral inversion at the heart of the Alabasta civil war: the people who lose faith in Cobra are responding to manufactured evidence that Cobra has abandoned the love-doctrine. Crocodile’s plot operates by faking a violation of the doctrine that the king has actually been living by his entire reign.
