The seed
The protagonist’s given name (ルフィ / Rufi, VIZ: Luffy) sound-encodes the English sailing term luff:
- Luff (sailing) = to turn the bow of a ship into the wind; the leading edge of a sail; the captain’s maneuver to set heading or shake out a sail. A luffing sail is one being trimmed for the wind. The captain’s whole job — choosing where the ship is pointed — is contained in this verb.
- The name is therefore the verb of being captain.

- Monkey = Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), the staff-wielding monkey-trickster of Journey to the West.
